Create an functional Android app to find nearby medical first responders in emergencies.
Pulse Alert is a proposed app (Android) that will be used in emergency situations to find the nearest medical first responder / first aider. It uses the in-build location technology in mobile devices to allow someone to request help for themselves or others.
This app will replicate the usability of the taxi hailing app, Uber, but for first-aid purposes. People who are trained as “first responders” or “medical first aiders” will download this app and register as “first responders / first aiders”.
Individuals who log in as “first aiders” will have their GPS/GSM position reported to a central database every minute. This is similar in concept to a taxi driver using the Uber technology.
The same app will be downloaded by the general population (anyone) for use when an emergency occurs. These people will log in as "users". In an instance where an emergency happens, users can access the app and press a button to alert the nearest “first aider”. The app will use the coordinates of the “user” to determine the location of the emergency.
Regardless of the choice, the app will then need to validate the user by either text (similar to Viber & Whatsapp) or by facebook.
The app is story-boarded in powerpoint in one of the files attached. Also attached are 3 flowcharts indicating possible use.
These “first aiders” will automatically get an alarm through their phone with the location of the alert and the option to RESPOND or REJECT. A “first aider” selecting the RESPOND option will be provided with a map to the selected area (Google Maps). If a person selects the REJECT option, the alarm will be activated on the next nearest “first aider”. The “user” will then confirm their location on a map.
This is the same principal that Uber – the taxi hailing service – use to find the closest available taxis. The “Goodsamapp” android app & iphone app is a similar concept.
The system will be on the android platform. Users will download the app and be given a choice to register as a "first aider". (Yes/No Choice)
Those who choose to be a "first aider" will accept the app running in the backround. Similar to Whatsapp, there will be no logout function.
What is a First Responder?
A first responder is a person, trained as a minimum in basic life support and the use of a defibrillator, who attends an actual or potentially life-threatening emergency. This response may be by the National Ambulance Service (NAS ) or by a community first responder or co-responder (e.g. Fire Service) based First Responder Scheme which is integrated with the National Ambulance Service.
What is the role of a First Responder?
The Chain of Survival developed by the American Heart Association, adopted in Ireland by the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF), was the principle catalyst for Community CPR Programmes focussed on early life saving treatment for victims of Cardiac Arrest. Over the last 15-20 years, many members of NAS were central to the successful rollout of these programmes across the country.
