Contest Brief
I need a logo for my Web Application Development consulting business.
I am a web application developer with 15 years experience. I've been freelance for the last 8 and doing business as LastObelus Consulting Ltd. for 6, but just have never gotten around to making a logo or a web presence because there has always been as much client work to do as I wanted. This is still true, but it does sometimes bug me that I don't have all the business-y stuff I'm supposed to have
I specialize in Ruby on Rails (http://rubyonrails.org), Shopify (http://www.shopify.com) custom applications, integrations, and backends, and rich web applications using EmberJS.
This wikipedia link describes what an obelus is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obelus The name LastObelus refers to fixing the last "bug" or removing the last incorrect thing from a project.
* I don't necessarily want to incorporate either the division symbol or dagger symbol into the logo *, so feel free to just treat LastObelus as a personal name.
I tend to like colour palettes that are dark/earthy blues with a splash of a bright highlight colour. I tend to NOT like a lot of tiny detail unless it is a simple splash of colour.
The logo should be recognizable from a distance or at a small size. It should convey quiet competence. It should NOT be flashy or bombastic, but a little audacious or quirky is welcome. If the logo has depth from shadows or shading, it should also be at least recognizable when photocopied.
I'm open to either simple abstract visual elements, or a kind of character or avatar if it seems compelling. I DONT want to copy visual elements from rails, shopify, or emberjs branding, however it would be ok to use colours similar to the shopify green or the emberjs orange as accent colours.
I don't like all caps (but the "Consulting" could be in all caps in a thin font, or even omitted)
I prefer the camelcased version of the name: LastObelus but I would also consider all lowercase logotypes.
Apart from these somewhat vague guidelines I don't have a strong vision for the logo, because I did I would just make it myself as many years ago I did work as a graphic designer for a few years -- so: surprise me!
The winner may also expect to be contracted to help with a blog, simple business website design, and business card using the logo.

#29 , I appreciate the thinking behind the icon, unfortunately at first glance everyone's going to immediately think "ladybug". I like ladybugs, but they don't have anything to do with my brand. And nobody wants to squash them!

#35 The LO as squared circle is interesting. I would like to see experiments with the bounds of the squared circle being broken out of in interesting ways.

#20 I like the look and feel and neatness of it, but I don't feel the icon has any connection with my company.

for #45 I like the typography a lot, both the font and using different weights. I like the look and shape of the icon/O, but evoking water doesn't really do anything for my brand. If it evoked fire it might work better.

In #19 I like the typography, the fact that it looks equally good on black or white background, and I like the treatment of "consulting ltd" with the line. I'm not a huge fan of the icon -- I have no difficulty selling my tech ability and need my brand to help a little with making my company feel approachable.

From #2 I like the general idea of a dark red shaded shape with a white silhouette inside, but the actual shapes don't do anything for me. I like the high x-height font, but not the distressed look. I hope to see some dark shadowed red stylized obelus shapes...or perhaps stylized obelus shapes as a white silhouette on dark shadowed red.

The first entry used a eurostile-like font. I kind of like squarish fonts, but they have a strong association with tech from 70s/80s so a logotype using that kind of font would need to have something about it that made it look fresh for me to accept it.
