Contest Brief

My brother has a small business filming and photographing events (like anniversaries, weddings and other family related stuff), his final products are mainly customized DVDs and photography albums. He never cared to make a website or make any kind of online presence (people would just contact him over the phone), now he's trying to change that and he needs a nice good looking logo, just to get things started.

He named the company after his initials, FM Mídia (mídia=media in portuguese, notice the accent on the letter í ). He has this idea that people are getting tired of "over produced" videos and photographs (like using tons of filters, effects and so on), he feels that a more "journalistic" approach (like simply reporting what is going on there) is more likely to be the trend in the near future. Said that, he wants his logo to pass an idea of "seriousness", but also confidence, like a news company logo, something like "Hey, look, I'm serious, you can tell by my logo that there will be no f*cking 3d rendered balloons on the corner of your pictures!".

As we discussed we had two ideas:
1) Have an outline of a fox merged to the logo (because the fox is the mascot of journalism - original? No. Easy to associate? Hell, yeah!). We also had this idea that the fox could have lens for eyes, I don't know, maybe that's the kind of idea that looks great on your head, but looks silly when executed.
EDIT: Guys, I'm sorry, I think this fox stuff just won't work. Except you can merge it in the logo in a VERY SEAMLESSLY fashion (like putting only a hint of it, say, a "í" letter shaped like a fox tail, just an idea) and still make it look serious, don't even bother to put the fox there. I've seen some logos without the foxes already and it looks amazing.

2) Make the logo resemble something that people would be used to, like a company. "Like Facebook", we thought. We even made an sketch of this one (see the link below), but that's just too cheap, it resembles facebook too much.

We still like the fox idea better, but that's absolutely no limitation to any of this two ideas, if you consider everything I said and come up with something completely different, great! (I think that's the entire point of the contest anyway, right?). Only, please, come with no balloons in the logo!

This logo is to be used on his website, but also as a watermark in some public exposed pictures and maybe even in some marketing material, so small variations of the same logo would be highly appreciated (like a main "squared" logo, another "stretched" or "wide" version, or, say you use the fox mascot, a version with the mascot alone to be used as an "icon", etc).

#21 : I really liked the overall idea, and thanks for the variations. The perpendicular accents in the corners of F and M looks like that marks on the center of old camera displays (and some digital displays too), that's some clever touch. See, it's very important that the letter "i" has the accent ("í", "Í"), that's not some random weirdness, it's something inherent to my language (portuguese). The MIDIA fox is almost there, since I want it to be very sutil, I think it should feature either the ears or the tail, but not both. The tail is a bit too long, also. Nice work :)

  #66, #68, #69, #70: Thanks a lot for your great effort but I think you're aiming at the wrong direction. This isn't really getting any better than #52 by adding more and more elements to it. Take a look at the other logos well rated logos: it's simplicity that counts. Choose one element and work it so that it will merge in the logo in the more seamless way possible. Merging a fox with a camera and put everything inside a camera display mark for sure won't help.

#29 : you aligned the M more nicely this time, but you pulled the Mídia together and deformed the other side of the M. That's no need for that, just keep it simple and I think it'll work better. Also, the Mídia is to classy, it could be more serious. ;)

  How is that copyrighted? Do you have the URL for page previous to this one (the one that will have some info on the image)? Will the author let it be slightly modified? (some licenses let you do that), this is my first contest, I don't even know how that license works!

#63 : I like the overall idea, but the FM font reminds me of GM (General Motors). The fact that the lens side of the camera is to the left also makes it looks more like a fish than a camera, if you could work on that it would be nice :), also, don't worry about the variations of the backgrounds and materials, focus on the variation of the logo itself ok? Thanks a lot for your effort.
