Contest Brief

We are looking for designs for a monster from another world known as the 'Hunting Horror', originally created by the author H.P. Lovecraft.

We would like something compact and muscular (rather than long and thin), have disproportional body dimensions and have alien features like multiple limbs and eyes (Asymmetry, such as an uneven number of arms or eyes would be good). It should give the impression of a terrifying alien hunting dog.

Below are two descriptions of the monster:

"And in the air about him were great viperine creatures, which had curiously distorted heads, and grotesquely great clawed appendages, supporting themselves with ease by the aid of black rubbery wings of singularly monstrous dimensions."
—August Derleth, The Lurker at the Threshold

"Hunting Horrors resemble enormous ropy, black serpents or worms with bat-like or umbrella-like wings. Their forms are said to continually shift and change, twitching and writhing, so that it is hard to view them. Some may have only a single large wing rather than two."

It's annoying because aside from some designers working hard to create original work, the buyer can also be sued for copyright issue.

Just a quick question. Is it a alien dog-like creature or a snake-like creature with wings?

A mix of both, which lies the challenge. Capture the winged or snake-like characteristics, but give the impression that it is a predatory beast built for hunting like a hound. We are flexible and would prefer an interesting design more than one that slavishly adheres to the description.

What we do particularly like from the description, are the 'curiously distorted heads' and the 'grotesquely great clawed appendages'.
