Contest Brief

I require an artistic design to be used as a personal seal for my wife and I. It could be used as a wax seal, or possibly as a watermark or for a t-shirt. I have very specific requirements about the elements to be included in the design. The design should include the following elements:
1. A tree, representing the Tree of Life
2. To the left of the tree, a female griffin
3. To the right of the tree, a male griffin
4. Somewhere, possibly below the tree, a key
5. If possible, a river flowing beside/beneath the tree, watering it

Points of detail
1. The design should be circular
2. The design should be black and white only. The design should be simple and not too intricate, as a wax seal is quite small.
3. The design should not look too formal or “heraldic”, even though it could be reminiscent of heraldry.
4. I prize subtlety. There are several elements to appear in the design, each of which are extremely important, but their importance should not cause them to dominate. I do not want a huge, overbearing tree, or griffin, or key. All the elements should holistically work together.
5. Ideally, the Tree would incorporate a Christian Cross, e.g. by being somewhat cross-shaped, by being wrapped over a cross, or having a cross embedded into it.
6. The female griffin should appear on the left, and should most certainly have an eagle’s head and wings. Attached is an image of a pink t-shirt ([url removed, login to view]) with a female griffin on it that I really like. The female griffin should have an eagle’s head and wings.
7. The male griffin should appear on the right. I would prefer it to look more like a lion, i.e. with a lion’s head. Wings are optional on the male, as is the case in some heraldic traditions. Attached is a photo of a belt ([url removed, login to view]) with a griffin on it that I really like (I have bought the belt). The male griffin should look similar to this.
8. The purpose of the griffins is to stand strong and guard the Tree. It is permissible that they might eat from the fruit of the tree.
9. The griffins represent courage, boldness, strength, loyalty, and wisdom. They should be drawn to reflect this. NOTE: they should not be too ugly or too scary looking. They are definitely griffins, and not dragons. In heraldic terminology, they should be more or less segreant in attitude.
10. The tail of the female griffin could (optionally) look like a typographic flourish (see attached image – griffin [url removed, login to view]).
11. The key should preferably be almost identical to the attached image ([url removed, login to view]), which is a real, physical, oversized key that I have.
12. Attached is an image ([url removed, login to view]) that I produced myself to guide the basic idea of what I would like to see. Please note that in this concept, the tree is far too intricate, so please design something that is simpler. The tree is a Celtic Tree of Life. Please do not make the design too Celtic. I’ve attached some other tree images to give inspiration. Also please note this concept is missing the Cross and the River.

Thank you very much for taking part in this contest, and good luck!

Employer Feedback

“Stevieyuki was careful to pay attention to the requirements as described in my brief, and then quickly and masterfully produced a quality design. Although I needed several revisions, I was quite sure Stevieyuki was the one for the job when I saw his first submission. He promptly responded to all my suggestions. I feel quite fortunate that he entered my contest.”

Hi all, thank you for participating in the contest! I have decided to award the prize to Stevieyuki's design #41. I loved Stevieyuki's ornamental tree and river, and of course the griffins. He was careful to follow the instructions in the brief but also gave his own interpretation and showed great creativity, and yet had a simplicity of style which I think is appropriate for the wax seal.

Special honours go to ariekenola and midget, who provided very good designs. I think the main issue was that many entries were too intricate.

    Thanks once again for participating!

Please also note that the female griffin should definitely look like an eagle (i.e. eagle's head and wings).
