Design 3D Model of a Lab Puppy

  • Status: Closed

Contest Brief

We are looking for talented 3D designers to develop characters for our games. In this contest, we need you to design a 3D model of a Labrador retriever puppy (see concept art for inspiration, also Google for examples of what actual puppies look like). The game will be targeted at (young) children, so the characters need to be appealing to them. The model does not have to be photo-realistic and can be somewhat stylized, but should roughly follow the natural proportions of a puppy. Most importantly, it must be super cute!

This contest is meant as a try-out to help us find talented 3D designers. We need many more characters and animations, so we expect to recruit several teams who will work in parallel on different characters. Top contestants will be invited to follow-on projects.

You can use any tool you like to create the model. The final submission should be in Wavefront format. Please target around 10k triangles for this model and you can use reasonably high res textures (3k x 3k).

For some sample pictures of lab puppies found via Google see lab-pics.zip file. I tried to include some profile views including full-body profiles, to help you visualize the puppy from all sides.

NOTE: just to be clear, we are looking for original designs, free of copyright infringements, so we could own all the rights to the final work.

Hi All, we have a week and a half remaining. If you are working on a design (or updating one), please let me know how much longer you will need. I encourage you to post work-in-progress snapshots, so I can provide feedback. Although there will be one top prize, for strong entries, we may provide 2nd/3rd place prizes.

Freelancer staff has unlocked the contest. I am able to view and rate your entries once again. You should see feedback from me on your work. Keep your entries coming. By the way, if you are not hearing back from me, it may be good to post on the public board. The freelancer system does not always alert me of your comments on private boards.

Do you require normal maps, or would you prefer all the detail and lighting information be stored in the main texture?

Normal maps are ok, but not required. Whichever you think will look better.
