The Division Street Project is a documentary project that seeks to capture the stories of Chicagoans through photography and recorded interviews. The project is rooted in my large-scale stitched panoramic photograph covering the North side of Division Street from the Gold Coast to Humboldt Park and in its final stages extending into the city limits. Individual portraits and interviews were also recorded with various residents, neighbors, visitors and business owners to augment the project.
With a team assembled to enact the mission of capturing and preserving the identity and history of the city's storied street, the Division Street Project is expanding and moving forward to the finish line at the Chicago city limits. The street was first made famous by Studs Terkels with the book Division Street in which he "chronicles the thoughts and feelings of some seventy people from widely varying backgrounds in terms of class, race, and personal history." Now in our current digital and internet era the work is revisited by local a photographer. Documenting the rampant effects of the gentrification of the famous street and the homogenizing of the city neighborhoods, Division Street Project seeks to capture the devastating effects of this process as little other evidence remains of our past besides the stories of the people and images captured within this project.
