Contest Brief

In the zip file, I have supplied 10 files. The main large file is my photo that needs to be edited. I have provided it to you in 16-bit PSD format for maximum quality. If you need it in a different format, just let me know but since most if not all of the work would be in Photoshop, I thought a PSD would be best.

The other 9 files are photos I have collected for visual ideas to help reach the overall goal for this photo.

I have this centered composition of me standing in the middle of a road with symmetrical trees on both sides. I am holding my arms out as if to push or control something; to have dominance over something. The file is a simple edit from the original RAW file I took, trying to save as much data as possible so you have a lot to work with. What I would like is:

1. To distort the background as if reality is "bending" around me, without me being affected. (but you still need to be able to tell what is behind me are trees - I don't want it distorted so much that the good background is ruined beyond recognition - I took a long drive to reach this location :) )
2. To create some debris or leaves or something around me to coincide with this distortion as if the force creating it is causing a disturbance around the physical area too. This debris needs to have a 3d effect similar to the ones seen in the idea photos I have supplied (mixture of blurry and sharp with some in the foreground and some in the background, etc)
3. To clean up some of the heavy darker lines on my face and under my eyes.
4. To create an overall surreal impressive look to the photo. I know that is vague, but once you see my idea photos supplied in the zip, I think the right creative person will understand what this should be.

Final edit should be delivered in a layered PSD, as well as a high quality TIFF.

If you have any questions along the way, I'll be happy to help as best I can.

Seriously? Did you even read the project description? And why did you flood the entries with a bunch of soft focus super imposed photos of yourself? You are way off base, my friend

Sounds like you work nights. You have been very faithful in taking the time to look at each and comment.......and I appreciate getting the email also. Glad you got the results you were looking for. It's hard since everybody has different taste. That's why it was so good to get your feedback... I don't know how the rankings work yet ?? Do you mean that you give a 2 star rating to the person you select? I guess all this shows on their profile, right?? Thanks again !!

The star ratings are just for my personal sorting while the contest is going on. They are not really a reflection of the quality of work, but more of a way for me to sort and rank the submissions based on how close each one comes to what I'm looking for (and if a new one comes in better than I expect, it can get upgraded and others downgraded) - So 2 stars does not mean bad, it just means I don't want to reject it outright and want to keep it on the board. 3 stars is a solid entry. 4 stars are exceptional and 5 stars is when someone pretty much nails it perfectly and I can't imagine it getting too much better except for fine details. This is just how I choose to use the stars - other people may use them completely different :)

Just for starters,, I think the shot from the waist up is more dramatic. Also, do you think the leaves add to or distract? ...and what kind of trees are these? I know this isn't what you want :-) just playing and, wanted you to see the colours and tell me more about the leaves. Do you think they add to a more fantasy look?? PS: also the trees shouldn't appear to grow out of your head !! so I took those branches off.

The branches converging into my head were done on purpose :) There are many other takes of this photo where they don't do that :) To answer your question, these are angel oak trees. The leaves some of the other entries added were just more realistic and had a mixture of blur and sharpness that was just really well done.

I want to get in on this...."my kind of thing" !! Nice shot and location.....the trees make a great frame !! How much work do you want done on the face?? ...and do you want an hdr effect...or softer effect for you ?? btw: I've just joined the site so I have no comments, but I have been working in PS for over 10 years and mostly in portraits.

Welcome :) I tried to provide the base file pretty "flat" so it can be worked with in whatever direction the editor decides to take it. Mostly my face should just have the hard dark lines removed (beside my mouth and dark spots under my eyes) - whatever will make me look better because when I took this I had been driving for a long time and did not look my best :) HDR is probably too extreme, but the image should be blended well where I do not look out of place (depth of field like this can sometime make it look like the person isn't really there in the environment but instead standing in front of a green screen) and somewhat realistic but with a magical touch such as #11 has done so well. I took a lot of time to drive to the location to get this background so any distortions to the background need to retain the identifiable characteristics of the area so someone can tell where I actually am.

Colors can be a lot of different things but I would like at least somewhat healthy warm skin tones on me. #11 is good, but #4 is too much red/orange

#11 is very good - realistic and blended together, yet magical. The colors are good too. I will keep the contest open to Monday out of fairness to those who already began and have not submitted.

#8 - Very nice colors and leaves - great job on the color. But I still must reject it on the basis as the first message I sent where the background is simply too distorted and I no one can tell where I am. The reason being, I drove a long way to reach this particular location and I would like for people to be able to tell roughly where I am by the line of symmetrical trees on either side of me.

I would avoid that for the sake of realism. The wind stirring up leaves around me is obviously edited, but still within the realm of possibility and suspension of disbelief

Entry #6 is currently in the lead because the color version of that entry hits the closest on what I was imagining. Very well done. Entry #4 is also very good, but it is warping too much to the point where the location I spent so long driving to is no longer recognizable :)

Sorry for the delay guys - my internet connection is slow and I've tried uploading the 100 meg file to Freelancer 3 times now and it never posts. So what I'm going to do is upload the zip to my own server and then post the link in the project description.
