Contest Brief

A few years ago, I had an artist create a "comic book cover" of my kids as super heroes. Now that it has been a while, I'd like to create a third and final cover. I reached out to the original artist, but have not heard back so here I am. The original artist referred to her style as vector art. See attached images. I would like something in a similar vein. Maybe in this third and "final" comic cover, the boys team up with my mom & dad who themselves are superheroes? Have plenty of ideas to explore! Looking forward to seeing submissions.

Well, I think you said it to the man yourself Jim - kind of hard for the guy to choose, yes? I'm sure he'd love to buy all of them if he had the money, but he came with a budget, likely as not has to stick to it. Which to pick when there's so many to love? Hard choice. I can't really blame Alex not rushing to make it. Means letting people down, whatever you do. Never a thing a man should rush to do, show's he's paying attention - or he's on holiday, hasn't given us a single one of us a thought since - one or the other. It'll work out. M : )

Everyone! Thank you so much for participating in my contest. This past weekend was a holiday weekend in the US, so my family and I were traveling home yesterday. I do want to let you know that this evening we will be making our selection an announce the award winner! I am stunned at the quality of work and variety of styles- very impressive! Again, I want to thank each and everyone one of you and appreciate your time and effort in making a special gift for my "Associates"! I will post again later this evening with the results!

I know I never shut up and I haven't the right to speak on the part of a single other person anywhere other than myself - so, I'm not doing that. But I do feel it beholden to say - because it's true - we got (or are getting) into art (sure) to make a living out of it, but only by doing what pretty much everyone did (or tried to do) here.

Do OUR stuff. Really, really, REALLY well.

And damn, if most people didn't do just that. Sorry about the rocky start and the rip-off attempts. That happens. Point is, this is been a benchmark contest. This is the standard working artists actually want to see and work for. Not an unoriginal entry rewarded - actual work, appreciated. All any of us ask.

Guess what I want to say is, thank you Alex. Whatever you pick, you won't be disapointed with it. And, really - we won't either. We want whoever wins to win.

So very rare that ever happens but - just goes to show - it actually can.

In short, you did good. Compliaments to you. M : )

: )... I couldn't agree more even if you were, Ramesh. It's like everyone's said, stuff the money - not that it's bad, mind - it's actually very good - but it's turned into one of those gigs everyone just seems to want to throw their best in, just because they can. I bladdy love that, closest thing we get to an office party around here. Dorian put in, for crying out loud. Yourself, Mario, Jimmy - Justin, Guillermo - no particular order - a score of rising talent on top of that. Usually, just one of those names turns up and y'can pretty much kiss whatever chance you may have thought had of going home with the money goodnight. Not today though. Not here. Really, really should just do this more often, it's been a blast. I doubt the CH's are going to complain, either... ; ) My continued best to you. M

Ah, rotten bad luck that. Still, on the plus side - at least you get to spend the time with your friends and family. There's always an upside, I assume to that, at least. See how it goes, you never know the CH themselves might be occupied with the holiday also, but (generally) extensions cost extra so - without a pressing need (few quality entries, that sort of thing, and we have them) - this might well have to be a case of cé la vie. If it's any consolation there are LOADS of ongoing Contests, always new ones out there, the list is always updating. Steer clear of Projects, search Contests and try doing it by date, oldest first - that way you find the nearest to completion still open. Tight deadlines help focus the mind and there's less turnaround time waiting too see how you got on. Oh, and hit loads. While submitting for one be doing the prep for at least a couple of others and hydrate regularly. Enjoy the Hoilday. M : )

I will say this- from what I’m seeing, I will want to work with many of you in the future. So if you don’t win this contest, there will be opportunities for future project. Good luck!

: )... Well, that's easy, it's faultless. Great composition, authentic comic layout - lovely style but I think, most importantly, you really nailed the likeness of Alex and his family. When looking at the boy characters the Client sees his boys, not Damien Wayne as drawn by somebody else copy and pasted twice and then covered with a load of crap to try and obfuscate what was actually done - this isn't what people come to Freelancer to buy - the work you've submitted is. Every last little thing a client could hope for. Beautiful, honest, well executed work. Faultless. My respect to you, Jimmy. My respect. M : )

That's really very heartening to read, Alex. If only we had more CH's that considerate. Have to be honest, I really don't envy you the task of having to choose here. If it might in any way help alleviate the pressure of having to make one hard choice - do be aware, the facility exists to award additional entries runner up prizes to those most deserving. Naturally I discount myself from this, if it in anyway helps, I'm happy to yield from such consideration should that in anyway help bestow some measure of recognition to some of the stunning talent on display today that so richly deserves rewarding. It is, of course entirely discretionary and - should your budget not allow it we completely understand. But if there is work that you would like in addition, pitch the artist a deal. Know this is an option. Takes the pressure off. My regards, M

Mark- thanks for the feed back. I get it. This project is a gift for my boys and as such I had them look at the designs as they were first coming in. They did get a little click happy and I wasn't paying attention until you started commenting. I've reject several of the entries and will be more discerning of the others. I just don't have much free time at the moment so I did do some glancing. I think you mentioned something about having tagged the bent entries. How do I see that?

Guy's like Jeremy - often times people will tag that out on the board in the open, like Ric. Personally, I tend to try not tipping them off and use the report button instead. Guys like that have skills, they're not random or chancing - they know exactly what they're doing and are sophisticated in their approach - the more you can get on record one of them suckering you in the better the chance of us seeing the back of one of them permanently. Those ones really are concentrated evil...

Best practice is to just open your entries, take a proper look. Yeah - it's a pain in the backside so best to so it when you have time and are focused, no distractions.

Don't worry though - whatever happens (as I say) we will never voluntarily allow you to leave with bent work and - so long as a Contest isn't sealed - we will always keep an eye out for problems, it's in our own best interest as well as yours so there is no conflict in our respective roles here. We've (mostly) got your back.

Hello. I really didnt want to be that guy, but something about #46 seemed familiar. I instantly recognized it from https://www.reddit.com/r/DCcomics/comments/a89x7y/adventures_of_the_super_sons_8_textless_cover_by/

Because the original cover is made by an artist from my country, and he is really well known, he currently works for DC and Marvel. He is representing our country internationally with hard work by being an amazing artist and i couldnt let it slip seeing someone ripping off his art. Sorry to #46.

Look - we get you're not industry, but - at the end of the day - you do possess eyeballs. It's no good just glancing at the thumbnails when the entries come in, you have to actually *look* at the entries, open them up. Granted - a guy like Jeremy is hard to see and - don't worry, I didn't actually just leave you too it, I used the report button on the entry last night - but the point with the others is, they were tagged with links to where they were from: if you were looking at entries properly you would have found the info. Fact is you haven't been. Not having a go, it's just - I put that copyright stuff inside the bent entries and not out on the board for a reason - it helps determine if the Contest Holders properly looking at the entries or just glancing.

Please - if you want honest work in you've got to properly review the entries, not just glance at the thumbnails. People have put effort into their work, even Jeremy (in his own way). We're not going to let you leave with ripped off work whatever happens, we can't, just - please - look at what people submit, properly - consider it.

You've marked one guy up top 5 stars and praise him and he's done - what - 20 minutes work?

Other people have clearly done far more and you've scraped them a bare 3 - it just puts people off wanting to try and leaves you open to sharks like the good Monsieur above- it's actually how he knew to rip you off. He can read you don't know what you're looking at.

Actually, I did - I'm one of those people who followed your brief. I spent the weekend and all of yesterday translating your existing comic book characters of the boys into fully animatable 3D versions - an upgrade, if you will, with the option of going both 2D and 3D depicting the adventures - kind of in the vein of The Incredibles - along with both the new Grandparent characters you didn't want. Although ready to submit at a reasonable hour last night, I logged in only to find the thing about the Grandparents was off. Rather than submit wrong, I apologized to my wife and was up till 3am this morning redoing the adult characters and getting something passing a half descent render in and - not 20 minutes ago, you just rated all that work I did on a par with clip-art. So, no. I no longer have an entry in this Contest, I don't - and - since you clearly don't even remember doing that, I think my work is done here. You have a good one. M

I just uploaded pictures of the boys, myself, and my wife. This is a superhero story and in this edition maybe it's a story where the parents come to help with some major crisis or enemy.... something like the X-men or Avengers- it's turns out to be a team effort. I even uploaded a picture of the family dog in case you want to incorporate that too. Looking forward to what you come up with!

@Jimmy P - : )... Yes, don't worry, Jim - you did read it right. Anyone that's been noodling this one the past 3 days, starting completely from scratch, read it the same way too. Like I said - hopefully nobody gets marked down for submitting senior characters with the boys - I'm pretty sure the CH is looking more for an artist that can deliver and then knuckling down to working out whatever image with that person later - so it's visual style, how you handle the work, that kind of thing, that matters.

And who knows, even though he may not have intended it it for this project - thinking ahead and seeing additional family members in the mix, not going to hurt. Should help get the old imagination fired up so, it's not a complete waste of time having followed what the brief asks for - just a bit of a kick in the pants, is all. Just, hopefully, not all in the front.... Fingers crossed for you. As always, my regards. M : )
