Contest Brief
We need 3 notification sounds for a mobile application we are about to release named Kukay (firefly). The visual identity of the app is a firefly and the general concept is a social app that utilizes the simplicity of firefly communication and gives the user a more sophisticated version of that utility to meet other users in their immediate surroundings. So the sound should evoke the feeling of an electronic or biomechanical firefly. Inspirations should be modern electronic music (although the sounds should be very short and simple), sci-fi, insects or electronic insects (the friendly kind, not the intimidating kind), and maybe a bit of the 16 bit video game sound, which has found its way into modern electronic music so perhaps that's redundant, but you get the idea. These sounds should obviously be mastered for optimal sound on mobile devices. The quality, simplicity and ease of listenability (as these are notification sounds, they can't get annoying after hearing 100 times in one evening) should be as good as something Apple would use for a stock sound. They have done an excellent job with their notification sounds and we want to emulate that success.
Sound 1 will signify the firefly lighting up or turning on/becoming active, flashing, or sending its signal out into the digital space around it. Again, very simple and ear friendly, but interesting and evoking the appropriate image.
Sound 2 will signify receiving the signal, a connection made with another user. So it should be similar, but it should feel subtly exciting, sort of a "success!" feeling but again, not overpowering.
Sound 3 should be an extremely short sound to signify a received message. It should feel cohesive with the other 2 sounds and have the same basic elements, but even shorter, simpler and easier to hear multiple times.

There have been a number of entries that we would be proud to use, and it's a tough decision. Thank you all for participating and sharing some great ideas, we have whittled it down to two people. We have PM'd the finalists so, if you didn't get a message like that, we're really sorry but again, there were a number of entries good enough for us to use, so we hated to have to pass on those, but that's the game. Thank you all again and good luck to you!

I really enjoy hearing all of your sound ideas guys, but can you do me a favor and each artist put every sound that they have uploaded, including previous entries for reference purposes, into one set on soundcloud, or one zip file on dropbox. This would help me greatly in critiquing and giving direction. If you use another site, please either make them available on one page, or in one file. Thank you so much for your entries and for making this such a cool contest!

To give people a more accurate starting point, the "Light Up" sound should have the following elements: A swelling synth (probably a chord) that gives the feeling of a flood of light from an advanced energy source, an artificial or mechanical insect sound, and should swell or pitch bend or flange in some way that makes it sound like its powering up from a powered off state. It should be a second long or shorter. It should be exciting, but not overpowering -- easy to listen to.
The connection sound should convey the feeling of success, or getting a "yes!" but again, not overpowering.
The Message received should be some brief, synthy sound that has a soft percussive quality, with an insect noise blended into it. It should be in the .2 second range.- 12 years ago

My first instinct is not to box the artist in too much. I want to see if they come up with something better than what I am vaguely imagining. But then they don't have a good starting point. It's a tough thing to balance. Thank you for competing!

Dear cstrand
I have submitted two sound files for demonstration and I will also submit the sound 3 if you like my work :). I have used some futuristic imagination to develop the sounds like some space connection between civilizations is established. The sounds can still be more demanding according to the needs but they demonstrate the original idea. Post production may still be applied if accepted and to me the prize doesn't matter, particiaption in Kukey for even more sounds is important to me.

One thing that is a consistent challenge is length. Most of these entries are way too long. Think about notification sounds that you use on your own phone, most of you probably use very short ones or no sound at all. I know it is a challenge as an artist to be expressive in such a small window, but that is the challenge at hand, do your best!

Hi cstrand,
That really seems a challenging task. I am on board. Also, may you kindly tell me how I can send you the sample files. Regards- 12 years ago

Contest Holder - 12 years ago
An equally challenging task unfortunately, but what I'm suggesting is to upload them to a soundcloud account (you can make them private if you wish) and submit an entry with some image file, and post a link to a soundcloud set in the entry description. It sucks, but that's the best I can do right now. Thanks for your interest.

Thank you to all of you who have entered, I'm very excited about some of these. Please concentrate on giving me multiple ideas for now rather than tweaking one. When you hit the right note, I'll give feedback for fine tuning. Also, please be patient as going back and forth from all of the sound links is very cumbersome and I want to handle each one the best I can. If you find yourself waiting on feedback, please use that time to review the brief and get some more ideas out. I promise to go over every entry, it just takes a bit the way this is set up. Please don't take down any sounds if I provide feedback as they will help for reference. Just add the new ones. Please feel to post general questions here, I'll help everyone the best I can. Thank you and good luck!
