Contest Brief
Aluclick is a clip up ceiling and facade beam system supplied by Supawood Architectural Lining Systems who are based in NSW, Australia.
The current clip SPW225 is unsatisfactory due to the difficulty of installation and the limited range of applications as a result.
The clip is hard to engage when installing a typical long beam, which is 6.5m long, even though only 3 clips are required (3 metre span is acceptable).
It becomes pretty much impossible with the details shown in drawing 3309N. This is because the SPW225 clip is mounted over Supabab, which is a thick felt backing for acoustic purposes.
When trying to engage the beam, the clips pushes into the felt instead of engaging with the beam.
In all three install situations - see drawing 3308N and 3307N as well, the ceiling framing is only a lightweight system, typically a Rondo suspended ceiling system of furring channels and top cross rails. This means that you can't push very hard when installing, but the clip must support 1/3 of the weight of a beam once installed.
See 3301N, 3302N, 3303N for cross sections of the three beam types we offer with the clip. These also give the weights of the beams. The clip SPW204 that is shown in these drawings is even more unsuitable for ceiling fixing as it requires a mallet to install with the beams, but is used for external facade applications instead.
See also brochure which explains the overall system applications.
Goal is to design a clip that can be clipped on easily in all ceiling install applications, while still supporting the beam satisfactorily even in possible seismic and minor wind loading situations.
Note that sliding beams onto a clip from the side is not practical as a ceiling may have a dropped bulkhead on both ends of the beam.
Installation needs to be by pushing up or otherwise attaching the beam from below.

Note a folded/ pressed metal design is preferred but this is not compulsory.
