New eBook Cover for Fantasy Novel

Contest Brief

I'm UPDATING this contest to get higher quality.

Lots of people like my fantasy novel, but it's just not selling. I think it's time to put a new cover on there.

Attached is the original cover. It really doesn't do a good job telling what the story is. Here is the link to the book:

[url removed, login to view]

I'd like to get a completely new cover. The picture I have is no good, and I think it may be copyrighted. This is the first book of 3 so it needs to be clear the book is part of a series. The book has a lot of diplomacy and also a lot of sword fights later in the book. It's a real East meets West kind of story.

I'm setting a higher budget for this project because you'll have to find royalty-free and copyright free images. I'm only asking for 1 cover here.

The freelancer who can make the cover that works will get a project to make the other 2 covers for the same price. So if you can find 3 good images and make it work you'll have $120. Remember, the images have to be COPYRIGHT FREE.

Well, 6 hours left, and only 3 entries remaining. There have been several late entries using old images, so if you think you can squeeze something else in, it'd probably be best just to make something similar to what's out there. Right now I'm leaning toward #50 since I can see that design working really well on three books with very few changes. #24 I think is finished since the person never contacted me. #60 is good, but I just don't have people who look like that in my book.

I've got to award this project in 1 day. Someone will have to get that $60; I can't take it back. I really liked the cover from FLand, #24, but they never got back to me so I guess they're out.

chitrobd has done a good job with 2 entries and has made changes. They also did a good job on another set of covers for me. I'm hoping to see some cool stuff in the next day.

Spektator has done a great job on two covers. I worry that the text is crowding in on the picture, and also that the picture doesn't really have much to do with my story.

The best cover so far is #49 by thehottestmen. I'm not sure if that is a royalty-free picture, but I hope so. This picture probably does the most to cover what my book is about, and I could see 3 books with similar covers.

So there's 1 day left, I hope we can see some good stuff from you 4 guys. Each of you has a good chance of winning this: don't give up now!

So far I'd say that #24 by FLand is the best, although I'm not too thrilled with it. Still, I could see three books with that kind of design, and I'm really looking to have a distinctive looking series.

Asian elements are good but not necessary.

If I were you I would try and get my money back for that last cover. The image they used can be found here: http://www.wallpaperpimper.com/wallpaper/download-wallpaper-Ship_Fight-size-800x600-id-17248.htm. I'm not totally sure whether the image is public domain or copyrighted, but still, when you post a contest you should be able to expect original work. Maybe lodge the issue as a dispute or at least give them negative feedback on their profile.

There's a real Eastern or Asian influence in these books, and #23 is getting at that. Now, these aren't Japanese Samurai living on the continent of Jonguria, they're more like ancient Chinese warriors. So anything with Asian weapons, battles, things like that will work ok.

The climax takes place in a narrow desert canyon full of boulders. There's a large battle in the canyon with a lot of crossbow action. There's also a battle scene where these older trade representatives are being attacked by Asian warriors on horseback. Another scene shows an old Asian-style warrior-monk come to their rescue and really kick ass. There's also a dramatic scene where the young protagonist is hiding in some underbrush as the enemy walks by looking through the forest.

These are just some ideas that hopefully will lend some direction.

You can find a free copy of the book at:

    http://www.bigskywords.com/the-jongurian-mission-a-free-epic-fantasy-ebook-novel.html

There are also comments down this board that describe the book a bit. Look at what some of those bestselling books look like to get ideas on how you can make a great cover without a lot in the way of a picture.

Please no black bars on top or bottom. I'd like to have full images of some sort with large author and title text that really stands out at a smaller scale.

Everyone will have to make their own pictures; the pictures from that site are no good as I can't contact the artists even though I've tried. It might be best to not include a "fantasy" picture per se, but instead something like some bloody scrolls, some swords crossed, really just any kind of symbol or logo if you can't find a picture that I can use.

I don't know what font was used by the original person. That can change, but I kind of like the design symbol at the bottom. Problem is you just can't read the text down there.

The first half of the novel describes Bryn's trip through Adjuria to the capital city and his political education at the hands of a variety of colorful characters once he arrives at the conference. From the other trade delegates, Bryn learns not only about his country's history and the issues of states' rights and trade inequities but about the affects of petty rivalries on politics, tactful negotiation and obligatory compromise. The second half of the novel sees him off to Jonguria on an ostensibly peaceful trade mission, which turns out to be anything but peaceful. The trip to Jonguria erupts into an adventure fraught with hardships and hazards the young Bryn never imagined and he is faced with decisions and conflicts that would challenge most men. The best thing about this exciting novel is that it doesn't end. This book is the first in a series so you get to keep reading to find out how the young Bryn fares.

I'd really like to get rid of the black on the top and bottom. I want the picture to take up the whole page. I think it looks too "home made" for my tastes. The Title font and Author font are fine, but they could be a bit bigger, especially if the picture takes up the whole page.

To get an idea of what other fantasy trilogy covers look like, check out this link:

    http://www.amazon.com/author-rank/Fantasy/digital-text/158576011/ref=ntt_at_kar_B000APIGH4

The world is medieval fantasy, so horse, knights, castles, and things like that. The ship only has a small part to play in the first book. Most of it take place with people moving on the roads or running for their lives from rebels wanting to kill them.
