Contest Brief
Hi
I am a writer involved in a project that produces books for adults (whose first language is not English) with very low reading ability.
This contest is for someone to conceive & design illustrations for 2 such books; I have the words, I need the illustrations to complete the books.
The stories themselves have been through an extensive process of linguistic simplification and have been condensed into 18 lines for story one (Homemade), and 12 lines for story two (The Knife). It has been decided that one illustration per 2-3 lines is optimum, so that's about 5-6 pictures for Homemade, and 4 for The Knife.
The stories have a sting in the tale, and appear very dark until the twist at the end is revealed - Homemade implies that something sinister is being made, perhaps a bomb? until we realize it's actually a homemade banjo that a busker is putting together, and The knife leads us to believe someone is being attacked at first - but is actually just about a parent preparing slices of fruit to keep the kids quiet. The pictures should be simple, and reflect the dark implications of the two stories.
I've attached two pics for possible inspiration, but use your imagination please. The books themselves will be A4 sheets folded in half, to make a page size of A5. Please layout the pics next to the appropriate text as it will look in the final book. Don't worry about fonts, just use Arial for now.
You can use or base your work on royalty-free photographs with or without post-shoot manipulation (e.g. in Photoshop), or your own original artwork/illustrations.
Please note:
Although these books are very simple, they are aimed at ADULTS - they may have low reading ability but they are not kids, nor are they stupid, and the illustrations should reflect this!
The Stories and sample pics are in the attached zip file.
Good luck!
Thanks,
Ian
