Start screen for 8 bit retro style video game.

Contest Brief

I need a start screen graphic for a retro style (8 bit Nintendo) video game. The file format should be .gif or .png. This will be used as a promotional piece. I want something like the style used in the game Zelda 2. What Im looking for is something in the same style, with the same look/feel. Im not looking for an exact copy or anything that would be considered copyright infringement in any way. I believe that the Zelda 2 start screen was made using 16x16 tiles and then scaled up. I want to replicate that look but it doest have to be done with tiles, as long as it looks good and is in the retro style. The game will be called Endoros Quest. I would like to incorporate a sword and a shield into the piece somehow as well as a medieval feel (perhaps a castle in the background or something).

Ive included a high resolution image of the games main character.

Here are some examples of the Zelda 2 start screen:

And the original animated version:

I should also note that the work needs to be completely original, meaning that it cant be made using preexisting tile sets.

In addition to the contest winnings, the winner will also have their name and/or website added into the credits of the game, which could easily lead to additional work from others.

Thank you.

Hi... I saw your post on Scirra's forums about this and I replied there, here is my official comment on this post though as I will be entering for this... Here is the concept I have thrown together so far, hopefully you like it I know that you liked the concept of the rough mockup of the logo but here it is more fitting your character's colour palette and still trying to conform to the retro look.

Here is the concept so far:

I will provide you with any file formats that you need along with a layered core file so that you can alter it slightly if you need to later down the line, everything will be named and such for you to easily make simple changes if need be, like take the logo or castle out of the image for whatever reason =]

Once this is complete and to your satisfaction, I will make an official entry.

    Kind Regards

What you need is more 2D style while I work mainly 3D. I uploading some of my works and I have tried giving halloween one some pixelation effects, will these do?

Yes, you are correct. I'm not able to use the 3d style as it's important that the 8-bit style is replicated for the project, more then just pixelation.

Although, what that being said, if the image was made using under 256 colors and with simple repeating patterns, then properly pixelated, it might work.

So, basically you want an 8-bit style start screen which has a similar mythological feel and look as zelda 2. What is the final format of the file you need? GIF, video or flash.
