Contest Brief

Attached is a pen and ink drawing of a tree, I now want some colour added to the image. When finished, this coloured image is to be printed as a greetings card. I have no fixed ideas on the type of colouring, whether a watercolour wash, or detailed colouring, bright or muted. A background should be added that refers to the text below, for instance a muted row of houses with holly wreaths on the doors and perhaps just vaguelly in the distance a garden hedge, with something hovering just above it

The tree however must stand out from the background

The Truthful Holly
I like to feed the robins in winter; the colder the winter, the more berries I will wear. I’m the guardian of the forest whilst the other trees take their winter sleep; bringing a surge of welcome colour into a grey world.
What house is not cheered by my greens and reds over the winter solstice, and doors hung with wreathes at Christmas?
I make an impenetrable fence in a hedgerow and my crown is often left uncut to trip those wicked witches, who are known to run along the tops of hedges.

Also attached is a sketch of the leaves, I do not want this image on the card, but would like the shape of the leaves represented in some way on the card.

I will need the final drawing in a layered format such as a .psd file as I may with to make slight amendments to the text.
I do not want borders, unless your design incorporates an artistic border. 3D views of the finished design will not influence my decisions.
I will always add comments if I feel they will be constructive, this does not mean I have decided to go with your design, but I always rate every submission.

Image size:

Landscape. 183mm x 131.5mm
This is 1.5mm bleed at top, 3mm bleed sides and bottom.
this gives a finished card size of 176mm x 127mm
Text and important detail should be another 5mm in.

Attached is a template the finished card should be fitted into. Please don't submit entries with the template, but rather just the drawing. I would however like the drawing to be added to the template on the winning entry.

None of the bark seems well coloured, please have a look at this previous entry to see what I mean:

Also within the leaves is a wreath tied with a bow, the bow has been coloured and thus clearly defined by everyone, but no one has added any subtly of colouring/shading to accentuate this wreath

  I'd like to clarify something to obviously oblivious blacktee011: even though colour choice (for one of the first entries (!)) might be off on #4 , the style is done that way intentionally so it'd appear to look watercoloured and more artistic, and less like a combination of Paint and PowerPoint. I am perfectly fine with the contest holder not liking the style since his other winners were more or less the same in style, but if you have any issues caused by stressing over whether your piece will win the prize, don't take it out on others. You just proved yourself to be a very pitiful person.

  The contest holder was just too nice with you,I am not being pitiful just honest and it's for your own good to know that you will not succeed in illustration with that style whether is made like that intentionally or not,so maybe you should resume your efforts for another category.If I win or not that's up to him but in any case you're not a threat to me regarding the final decision,just try harder.No offence and take care :*

As I've been asked, I thought I'd better explain about the witches:
In the old days, the hedges were cut around a field to stop them growing out of control, but often the holly trees within the hedge were left uncut. Some people say it was to give the farmers sight lines while ploughing, others say it was thought unlucky, and as the holly is slow growing it didn't matter. But there is also a saying that witches run along the top of hedges and the Holly was left uncut to trip them up.

  No I didn't. It's a landscape template, in that it is a template for a landscape greetings card. The front image goes on the bottom half, it is the folded over and the top half forms the back. (you leave the top half blank)

  Like the layout, hate the red lips. The blue eyes seem wrong as well.
