I'm a self-published author who writes romantic comedies on Amazon. I've mostly only done my own covers and scrapped together the work from stock photos, but I'm starting to move my style to more of an illustrated/cartoon based format. I'm hoping to not just find an image for this one cover, but find an artist I can work with and trust who fits my brand style. I'd really love to establish a partnership with someone I can go to for all my covers in the future (I release a book about every month).
My next book is going to be a little bit of an experiment as I haven't seen any other authors try it yet. That means I need the cover to kind of tip-toe a style line. The book is a vampire rom com. I want to allude to the vampire elements as playfully as I can, but not so playfully that it doesn't have that sort of sexy/fun/charming rom com look.
The image I want is an icon style heart with fangs. I'm picturing a heart with the fangs coming down from the top and within the heart.
I'd also like a profile or 3/4 view of a man on the left facing a woman on the right. The man should be well-dressed with maybe one touch of vampire-like clothing. Like a black suit but a raised collar, or a short cloak, etc. Nothing too crazy. He should be handsome and looking down at a woman who is shorter than him. He should look amused/charmed/etc. I'd also like for him to have one hand behind his back kind of casually holding a chalice that is catching drips of blood from the tooth above him (the one coming down from the heart)
The woman should be shorter than the man, young, pretty, and looking up into his eyes. She should look amused/charmed/etc as well. I'd like him to maybe have a hand on her cheek/face/hip or wherever so they look like they're about to embrace. She can be holding his arm or whatever looks natural. She should be kind of leaning in toward him with one leg kicked up behind her and one tip-toed on a gravestone to help balance out the height difference.
I'd love it if there was almost like a parody of the skyline background that's popular in rom com behind the heart. I'm not sure if this would look good, but maybe even if there was a city skyline behind the whole image, but where it overlaps with the heart, the skyscrapers become tilted gravestones/crosses/statues, if that makes sense.
I've included some references from my own covers so you can get a kind of idea of my brand and style as well as some images of other covers who have done cartoon characters I liked the style of. This cover will be a slight departure from my brand because I haven't done cartoon characters on a cover exactly, but I hope you can find a way to sort of blend my brand with some of these ideas. I've also included some common colors for my genre to work with.
“Valeria was amazing to work with! I asked for some really specific things in an illustration for my book cover. Valeria went above and beyond by looking at some examples of my previous work and making sure he submission didn't just match what I was asking for, but also making sure it matched the brand and style of my previous covers. She also exceeded my expectations by providing several options with each draft with differences in execution, color palettes, and other little touches that she thought up herself. Once I started communicating directly with Valeria, she was super fast, responsive, friendly, and never complained about making tweaks or trying different things in the design for me. She was also nice enough to send me *all* the options in separate layers at the end of the process so I could use some earlier elements from other drafts for thinks like advertising and whatever else I might decide to tweak later. I can't recommend her enough. She was amazing to work with! ”
