Contest Brief

UPDATE: We've extended this deadline to 10 Dec 2021.

*** Please avoid long sections dedicated to how great it is to use the platform. This isn't a hard core sales pitch. It's a how-to piece. We hope that the process you describe in the article speaks for itself and naturally and elegantly positions Freelancer.com as the obvious choice to get done the job you're describing.

Claim your share of US$10,000 by joining our 1500-word article writing challenge!

To enter this contest, we want you to write an exceptional article on the topic of:

How to get X done on Freelancer

We want a 1,500-word article on how to use Freelancer.com to get a certain type of work done. You can write on any topic (see attached spreadsheet for ideas)

How to get a song composed on Freelancer.
How to get a Shopify store set up on Freelancer.
How to run a logo contest on Freelancer.
How to get articles written on Freelancer.
How to build a mobile responsive website on Freelancer.
How to get your pagespeed insights to green on Freelancer (and why it matters!).

Include how the reader might use projects, contests or even both (if you’re writing about multi-stage tasks) in order to accomplish the work you’re describing.

Choose a topic that is original. It can be in an area as niche as you wish. As finalists, we'll select articles with a diverse range of topics. So make sure you pick an original area. The contest will not be sealed, so you can see what topics have already been chosen, and whether you think you can either write a better article on that topic, or choose a different topic.

REQUIREMENTS

Your article must:
- No longer than 1,500 words
- Contain screenshots of the workflow you’re describing
- Explain why a project or contest (or both, any mix or number) are the best choice for the work you’re describing
- Not start off by saying how hard or challenging the task is to do (yes, we make it much easier, but - we don’t want people to begin with negative thoughts in their head)
- Contain links to the relevant hire pages where appropriate (for example www.freelancer.com/hire/graphic-design)
- Use proper heading styles (H1/H2/H3/etc)
- Contain a subtitle of between 145-165 characters (THE TITLE AND SUBTITLE DO NOT COUNT TOWARD THE WORD-LIMIT FOR YOUR ARTICLE)
- Contain a template that the reader can cut and paste into the “tell us more about your project” field to help them follow the instructions in your article and properly brief their project or contest to the Freelancer community. This should be no more than 4,000 characters. THIS DOES NOT COUNT TOWARD THE WORD-LIMIT FOR YOUR ARTICLE.

Judging will be based on the following criteria:
- Whether or not you’ve followed the instructions above
- The quality of your written English
- How easy it is for an average reader to follow your instructions
- The originality of the topic you’ve chosen
- How well your article convinces the average reader to take action (like post a project, hire a freelancer, etc). Note: please don’t be over-the-top salesy, it should be natural

We will be running the contest in two rounds:

In the first round, we will select up to 100 articles that have been submitted. If your article is selected in the first round, you will win $50 cash and make it into the second round.

In the second round, the judges will decide on the best article, and grant the winner $5,000 cash.

SUBMISSIONS

Please create two versions of your submission, a Gdoc and a PDF. Place the Gdoc link at the top of your PDF and submit the PDF to the Freelancer.com contest page. This LINK WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD THE WORD-LIMIT FOR YOUR ARTICLE.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

As conditions of winning a prize in this contest, you agree to give Freelancer worldwide, perpetual royalty-free non-exclusive rights to publish the article and use it in our marketing materials. Prize winners will have their articles published with credit attributed to the author.

It's probably because you were penalised after violating any of the rules established to participate in contests. If that is the case, then you cannot upload entries for any contest. You can read everything about contests in the Freelancer website itself. If you think nothing is wrong about your profile and your problem persists, I suggest contacting live Freelancer support. Good luck!

Respected contest holder I had written an article on music production and related services a few weeks ago, and I was one of the first ones to address the topic.

Since the rating is not going on in an chronological order, early entries that have not been rated or looked upon have chances of their content and ideas being copied and moulded, without the early applicants having a chance to further improve on their entry.

other similar articles have been rated despite them being late entries, as you mentioned in your earlier post you won’t be commenting on every article but its just something I wanted to address. Thank you. #239

It is safe to suggest an extension for this project with recent entries just beginning to reflect the objectives of the contest.

I apologise for joining the party late into the contest.

I have an important observation I would like the contest management team to look into. I will appreciate it if you select few entries found worthy enough and consider this importation information.

1,500 words is good. However, the process flow is stretching the contents way beyond 1,500 into 1,700 - 1,800.

Unless an entry is ended abruptly as evidenced in many entries, the process flow writeup appropriates between 1,600 and 1,800 words to get a proper job done. Why?

We would be describing searching the platform
We would be talking about checking sample reviews
We would be talking about recruiter
We would go into details to discuss payment and milestone payment setup

Hi, what you are describing are already available on the platform though. This is a personal opinion, but that's way too much to be an easy read, since the platform is not that hard to use. The brief said up to x100 runners-up, and I've been in an official contest before, they will probably take less than that.

You are asking for too much, and 1,500 words is ideal. Write more efficiently and make better decisions.

Hello Robert, since no one is, I will mention the elephant in the room for everyone. Earlier the prize was $10000, now it’s $6000 but the brief hasn’t changed to reflect that. It still says $50 for 100 people and $5000 for the ultimate winner. What’s up with that?

    Hi.

Any chance you can review entries in chronological order? I have been waiting for feedback for over a week. Its quite disheartening to see newer entrants have their's reviewed. I understand that the newer ones have a higher probability of meeting your updated brief, and your approach could be considered a more efficient use of your time, but please I'd appreciate an update so I can alter if needs be.

    Many thanks.

We see where you're coming from, but to be honest, after reviewing and providing feedback on the first few, we've decided not to provide written feedback on individual submissions unless it's already at a four-star level (We may comment on some three-star ones if they seem to have potential).

We haven't looked at yours yet, so we're not saying yours is or isn't at that level.

But the point is, if you 1) look at our comments here in this comment section, especially the outline we provided 2) look at the 3 and 4-star entries (and feedback on those), and 3) see the first 5-star submission ( #288 ) - you'll have enough info to determine if you entry needs work or not.

That said, we'll have a look at yours now

I've given my first 5-star award. See #288 to see what a great submission looks like (by don't copy anything from it word-for-word under any circumstances). You'll see that it follows the outline I described below and offers a nice mix of what the project is all about AND how to use the platform in an elegant manner.
