Project Description

Continuous Positive Space: Open Call for Visual Design

Illustrators, fabric designers and any other visual artists are asked to submit patterns and designs to be laser cut from attractive fine timber panels.
The panels are part of an ongoing multi-disciplinary arts project that aims to connect artists with craftsmen and new technologies, and will become part of a wide range of work and products, made available for sale.
Contributing artists will be paid a percentage of the sale price of any work that their imagery becomes a part of.

Continuous Positive Space is at once a motivation, theme, and requirement for the project.

Motivation: connecting artisans and experts from different disciplines, creating opportunities for collaboration and fluid models for small business, re-imagining the division of labour in a social context; a continuous positive space linking individuals through which ideas can travel and grow.

Theme: responses to the notions of living, working and recreational space in the modern world, population and environmental concerns, the changing nature of space throughout history, digital and online realms, religious sanctuaries, personal havens; your interpretations of the idea of a continuous positive space.

Requirement: as the designs are to be cut from and in timber panels, designs must contain a literal continuous positive space - i.e., disconnected figures cannot be included. The traditional woodworking craft 'fretwork' is a good starting point for research.

Submissions should be in the form of a common graphics format, i.e. jpeg, and at the highest possible quality. If your pattern repeats, you may send only the repeating section, and instructions about the repeat style.
