Project Description

This project is for a unique style of picture book that requires each full color page to include specifically placed objects, depictions and visual pathways which are directly integrated into each page’s storyline. Each of the 22 pages and Cover for the project will be carefully detailed concerning the expectations of the artwork. Collaborative communication between the artist and employer will involve agreement on the completion of each illustrated page and feedback for any needed revisions.

As an example, consider this typical description of a page, “As the boy kneels to tie his rowboat to a washed up log on the sandy shore of the small island’s beach, he realizes that he can either continue by traveling to the left along the sandy shoreline and following the footprints that lead to the path entering the thickening tree line or he can choose to go to the right where the sandy shore ends at the base of a tall cliff and the more dangerous, but passable rocky shoreline begins”. This illustration would be from the perspective directly behind the boy as he faces the island (as most of the pages will be oriented in a perspective view from behind the character).

The unique style of the page artwork is depicting a scene in which the reader can visualize themselves in the situation faced by the character and be challenged by the need to decide which way to go. Each decision will lead the reader to a predetermined page where yet another storyline option is presented. It is most important that the artwork from one connecting page to another is consistent in visualization, style, color and scale so that the reader feels as though they are “moving” through the story as it progresses. This project will represent the second publication of the patented concept for selecting alternative storylines.

The illustration style desired is targeted to be suitable for early readers, ages 6 to 8. There is a preference for airbrushed artwork using a vivid color pallet, but other similar styles will be considered. Preferred bidders chosen will be asked to submit a sample illustration based on the “boy on the island” example previously described. The intention of the sample illustration is to confirm communication capabilities between the artist and the employer. Reading and writing in English is required for this project in order to collaborate on artwork details and ideas.

Each of the 22 pages will be drawn to fit a standard sized picture book format, dimensionally measuring approximately 14 inches wide by 8 inches high (each illustration will cover a 2 page spread) with designated spaces for story text to be later added by the employer. The cover will be drawn to dimensionally fit 6 inches wide by 8 inches high. The final digital format desired needs to be compatible with Adobe Illustrator CS5, preferably in AI formatted individual files.

The illustrator selected will be required to approve a sale of full copyright agreement to the employer, which will need to be completed and signed before the start of the project. The chosen illustrator will be given credit for the work performed and specifically named on the back cover of the picture book, provided the picture book is chosen for final publication. The project will need to be completed within 20 days. Payments will be made using the Milestone Payment System. Partial payment will be released upon the completion and acceptance of the first 10 illustrations and the balance of the payment will be released at the completion of the project.
