Rotating Background Doesn't Work on iPhone in Portrait Mode

I have a website which uses a jquery plugin for a rotating background. This works fine and displays properly on desktop and on the iPhone in landscape mode.
I need to get this background working in portrait mode; ideally I want to specify a different viewport for landscape and portrait, but have been unable to implement this.
