I want to create a website / database / apps to help 14-16 year old pupils to revise for Science GCSEs in the UK.
It should flash up questions, which may include a graphic from old exam papers.
Pupils click to reveal the answers.
Website does not have to work out if they are correct or not.
Pupils mark their own work, and click a button to say ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.
Website adds up their total correct.
Website remembers which were right and wrong.
If the question is right then website remembers and doesn’t ask them again on during that session.
If the question is wrong then it ask them again 2 questions later and 2 questions later after that. Pupils can stop anytime and be given a ‘report’.
Some of the answers will be quite long, maybe include a graphic , various bits of formatting, and possibly a hyperlink.
Report to contain something like e.g.
“You got 100% of the E grade Questions. 80% of D grades. 50% of C grades.”
Pupils don’t need to log in, or have a password etc.
However pupils must be able to select course / module / topic and also difficulty (grade).
Ideally the website would be located on [url removed, login to view] [name of server] but this is not essential if it doesn’t offer the correct service. I can supply the correct username and ftp passwords to make this happen.
I would expect the freelancer to make reasonable alterations to the specifications and formatting as we build it. Obviously I am happy to pay extra for any large scale alterations.
Website must be able to have a reasonable large number of people on it at one time without crashing or going slowly. As a test I will put 25 people on it in a classroom to try it out before paying out.
Database
Questions and answers for the website are to be selected from a database.
There could be up to 4000 questions to go onto this database, although I only have about 500 at the moment. I don’t want to upload each one individually. I must be able to import a file, or copy and paste a large amount at a time.
As I add questions, they are added to the database, so the website has more to select.
As I add questions, if they come from a new category, then the new category selection automatically appears on the website menu.
Database needs to be simple so that I can update it easily. I’ve used XL spreadsheets before which were good for uploading but they have proved too slow and unreliable though.
Please advise on best solution to database…Access? SQL? I’m fairly tech savvy but may need brief instructions on how to access and upload large amounts of questions to the database.

Payout after this has been completed and shown to be stable. Will have to stand up to being tested by 25 pupils in a computer room so that I can check the stability of it. (Week beginning 14th April roughly). However I would like it created as soon as possible as I have some spare time to play around with it before school restarts.
Apps
App to have similar functionality as the website i.e. flashes up questions and answers, and re-tests them on the ones they’ve got wrong. Should give them a report card.
Questions and menus will have to resize to fit on to a smaller [url removed, login to view] graphics are included you’d need to be able to click on to resize and view more [url removed, login to view] to update and check weekly for new questions on the database. There should also be ‘check for new questions’ option in the settings menu.
Apps to go first onto Android, as this is what most of my pupils have. (on or around 21st April). However I would like it created as soon as possible as I have some spare time to play around with it at the moment. Payout for this app would be after this date, when it has shown itself to be stable.
Apps will need to be created for IOS and Blackberry once the stability of the Android app has been tested. Final Payout when this has been completed.
