College is the place where you’re supposed to find yourself and trust me I've been looking for a while now. After twenty years at home, I’m ready to get the hell out of here! I spent two years in community college after barely making it out high school. Fortunately I cleaned up my act managed to pull off a B average and I got accepted into a South Everglades University. I’m on my way there now it’s just far enough to escape my mother so it’s perfect!
“Ma come on! I’m ready to go!”
“Don’t rush me, help me out, do your sisters hair,” I groan and grab a handful of her Anaya’s hair and brush it firmly with a wide paddle brush.
“My forehead! You don’t have to brush my eyelids,” Anaya complains as I tautly pull her bushy blonde coils into a bushel before wrapping a desperately weakened black rubber band into her hair.
“I’m ready,” I call out as I urgently drag my heavy suitcase out down the stairs.
“You need to act like you have sense. I know you’re ready to go but don’t think your running any show here,” my mother states aggressively. I groan and purse my lips in annoyance she’s so easily offended her face grows in agitation. Can’t wait to leave!
“I’m just excited you know, I’m twenty years old and I have never stayed away from home, like this. I’m just ready for my fresh start,” my mother glares at me sternly and I shrink my excitement in her presence—“But I will miss you guys so much,” I stammer in reply gently and my mother breaks her icy glare.
“Leave your bag here by the step, Jason will put it in the car,” I nod respectfully and jog away quickly. I grab the keys to my mom’s Nissan Sedona and head to the car. I had a pretty good upbringing, but my mom can be so strict. I just need my own time to figure out what and who I want to be without the constant pressure to be a role model.
I was an only child for twelve years until my mother got married to Jason and got pregnant with Anaya. Jason is a pharmacist he grew up in Sweden. Now all I ever hear is Jasmia you need to be responsible Anaya is looking up to you. But how am I supposed to be an example when I don’t know what the hell I’m trying to do with myself, I applied to college as an undecided major. I really need to get it together.
My best friend Mariah left me behind this spring when she applied for early admissions at South Everglades University but I will be meeting her out there. She’s been gone for almost nine months we've been best friends since we were fourteen years old I really miss her. I would have roomed with her but I was already placed in a dorm room with someone else. I’m going to be in Hammocks which are for upperclassman and transfer students. My mind keeps racing a million miles a second and my heart is going just as fast. I haven’t met my roommate yet I couldn't find her Facebook, I just hope she’s not a bitch or a psycho.
Everything is finally all packed up me, my mom, Anaya and Jason are ready to head out and it’s a long three hour ride to Orlando. I hope I fall asleep quick otherwise I will be ready to strangle Anaya’s annoying little ass. Eight year olds talk too much! I rest back in my seat, pull my magenta hoodie over my head and plug in my iPod as I lean my head against the window, its lights out for me as my eyelids struggle to remain open and I descend off into la-la land.
