Project Description

We are a music startup from India. In last couple of months, we have build our first release and our beat version can be seen at [url removed, login to view] - this is half chef/half custom changes to get the server raining. Clearly, this is not upto the mark going forward, we wil need a clean rewrite.

Going forward, we want to update the setup and allow other developers to checkout and work on the server itself (reason being lot of UI people dont have experience with rails) so that can do the work easily.

So we would like to have the main site running at:

[url removed, login to view]

and then each user can run its own checkout from:

[url removed, login to view]
[url removed, login to view],[url removed, login to view]

while live editing the code they will get live updates.

One way could be setup a predetermined folder out of which the code wil be executed so Passenger/unicorn etc can pick up the latest changes.

We can have one common database for all users - as we dont expect UI developers to do migration so there should be minimum conflict. whenever, i need a migration, I can do it as the main user - running out of user "beamtous" checkout.

We should use rvm to install a systemwide Ruby 1.9.3 install and use that to run the application. Since we will be using bundler, it should be fine if users install different set of gems to run and test their app but initially I dont see much of that happening.

..

So work to be done:

-- Provide scripts to setup the whole rails and application ecosystem with postgres installed so that the main user site runs at: [url removed, login to view] and each user from [url removed, login to view]

-- The user creation should also be automated with ssh/authorized_keys setup. So basically for a new user, I should just add another input point in the data bag json and their ssh key and the user should be setup.

-- We will be using chef-solo along with Librarian.

>>

-- NOT VERY IMPORANT but it would be awesome if can easily setup user level and system level bash aliases. Again, not important.....

The current chef cookbook that we use: [url removed, login to view]
