Translation and annotation of academic manuscripts from Old and Middle English to Modern (UK) English

Purple Academics is a team of two medieval specialists. We are producing 21st century versions of medieval classical poetry and ballads; medieval historical and religious texts and medieval legal documents. In addition to the "Translation" and "Academic Writing" skill sets selected above, we would like to find somebody with a proven passion for the medieval period in England. We need one or two assistants to translate from old and middle English and from medieval Latin and also to annotate texts. Additional work will be indexing and cross-referencing the material - this will start a soon as we have enough completed translations. This is an on-going, long-term project. We will pay up to £300 per month - at a rate of £15 per hour (ie. 20 hours per month). There will be a trial period of 2 months whilst we, and the translator decide if the rate of work produced is acceptable (we will decide on a word-rate together, this is a unique project and the usual translation rates per word are not applicable). After the 2 month trial we will also come to a decision about whether we work well together as a team. This is a long term project - and so team cohesion is important. Candidates will be asked to translate two short (approx. 100 words) passages - one from old English and one from medieval legal Latin and to add a short annotation (up to 50 words) about the documents they have translated. Those candidates who are not accepted, but are short-listed, will be paid £15 for the translation exercise. (Up to a maximum of 8 short-listed candidates).
