Project Description

I have free family magazine that comes out every month. It is both in print, and in PDF form. I would like an app that allows users to select an issue from the main menu, browse the articles (PDF form), and access extra content (photos/articles/videos) about an article that we couldn't fit in the print edition. Also, I would like the users to have access to bonus material, extra content that is not tied to any article. Lastly, from the main menu, there should be a quick way to access all the current coupons available to the users provided by our advertisers so they can pull them up on their phone when shopping or dining out.

The parameters:

1- we need to use thumbnails to represent a list of available issues from the main menu. The obvious choice is to use the front cover image.
2- we want to also use thumbnails that you can swipe through to select which extra content you want to view.
3- zooming in and swiping through magazine pages is a must. Probably a good idea to have a small nav bar along the bottom of the screen that says the name of the article, the author, page # and indicates if any additional context is available or if narration of the article is available.
4- articles for kids may also include an audio file that reads the article to them. This should be easy to turn on and off (pause, rewind, etc) and should correspond to the article the user is currently viewing.
5- the content for the app should be as easy as possible for us to update. One idea that can be used or not used is to host a directory on a website that functions by putting each issue in a unique folder, and then any additional content in page numbered sub folders like this:

Rootdir\201308
..\issue (put the main PDF in here)
..\bonus ( put any bonus articles or bonus content in here)
..\PG14 (put any additional content that goes with the article on page 14 in here)
Rootdir\coupons (put active coupons in here)

The app can scan the directory on a refresh command to determine if any new content is available. I'm open to better ideas.

6- The app is designed for kids so the navigation should be simple relying on icons where possible.
7- There needs to be an indicator that pops up in the lower right corner or something like that when an article has extra content.

Should be designed for an ipad or iPhone, and we can discuss android as a second step.

Milestones:
After bidding we will reduce the list to two or three freelancers. We will ask each to submit detailed mock ups or screenshots of how it will look when complete and describe functionality. Based on your final design, bid, ratings, experience, and timeline, we shall award the job out. I think this task shouldn't be overly complex - these aren't new ideas, just merging a PDF reader with a MP3 player and m4v player and jpg displayer. Value will be in new creative ideas, the interface, ease of use, and timing/price.

We may pay all freelancers that we ask to submit a mockup a reasonable fee for the time it takes to make a mockup, even if we ultimately do not select you if we believe that you did a great job trying to win the bid.

You are also able to submit more than 1 mockup if you have competing ideas and want to present some options.

We are not a large company, actually quite small, but the app will become the centerpiece of our 2013-4 relaunch. We will follow it with a new website so winning this bid will open up other opportunities as well.

Final bid should include testing and submitting to apple store, and debugging any issues found after release.

We wish everyone best of luck! Thanks for reading, and I hope you bid. We have a good budget for the project but want a great product in exchange.
