Project Description

There have been a number of tornados recently in the US. There was very little warning for some of them. This app would tap into the National Weather Service's Atom RSS feeds to alert the user when a tornado warning is issued.

A "tornado warning" means that a tornado has been spotted and that persons in the vicinity of the tornado should take cover immediately. The National Weather Service provides RSS feeds by state and county that include tornado warnings. A directory is here: [url removed, login to view]

The first page of the app would contain explanatory text, followed by a drop-down for states. Once the user picked a state, there would be a drop-down for the county. When the user selected the county, the app would be "on." The user would be taken to a second page indicating the app was "on" for the state and county selected. There would also be an "off" button.

When the app is turned "on," it continues to run in the background until turned off. When the app detects the phrase "tornado warning" in the RSS feed, the app sounds a siren, flashes, vibrates and takes the user to another page. This page says in large print "tornado warning." It also includes a button to turn the app off.

Here's an example of the RSS feed. This one is for Galveston County, Texas: [url removed, login to view]

At the time I am posting this job, there are no tornado warnings in the US. However, if you go to [url removed, login to view] you can see a text rendition of what one looks like. As you can see, all the app has to do is recognize the phrase "tornado warning" to turn on.

At this time, the only states involved would be Texas and Oklahoma. You can find the county codes for Texas and Oklahoma on this page: [url removed, login to view]
