Project Description

The below is what you should read to answer the questions:

1.

Read the chapter of "The Fourth Paradigm" entitled "The impact of workflow tools on data-centric research Carole Goble, David De Roure". A pdf file is attached.

2.

Read sections 1 to 3 of the paper "Scientific Workflow Management and the Kepler System". Attached as Kepler [url removed, login to view]

3.

Explore the online workflow tool "SciencePipes" at [url removed, login to view] -- we will be using this later as part of an assignment.

Below is the questions you should answer:

1.

Define what is meant by scientific workflow, and explain briefly how its execution models differ from business workflow.

2.

Explain briefly how scientific workflow improves the practice of data-centric science.

3.

What is meant (in Kepler) by the term director? What are the two most commonly used directors?

4.

Go to the the SciencePipes website, and register. Explore the basic information provided, then answer these questions:

4a. What is the most important purpose of the site, and what is the underlying workflow engine that executes its workflows?

4b. What are the six data sets available for creating workflows? (you need to browse around a bit to find the answer)

4c. Search for a pipe entitled "Bar-Tailed Godwit in California". Look at both the results of the workflow, and its structure (you may need to make a copy for editing to do the latter). One of the results is a line chart -- briefly explain what this line chart tells us.

4e. Look at the structure of the pipe, and briefly explain how it works.

4f. You should be able to select a different species when you run the pipe. Select "Barred Owl", and comment on the results compared to the Bar-Tailed Godwit.

Maximum 900 words ie concise and considered answers, in your own words, are needed and off course no plagiarism. Need it within 32-36 hours.
