Assessment Description:

Part A (1500 words – 35% of the total mark for the unit)

In 1500 words discuss the pros and cons of the deinstitutionalisation that commenced in the 1980s

and that has led to mixed and controversial outcomes. Describe and discuss this controversy using

the views of the key stakeholders. Here are some additional points to address:

Compare the Australian situation with one in a country that has either not implemented

deinstitutionalisation in the mental health sector, or where it has led to significantly

different outcomes.

Pay attention to the ‘side-effects’ of this practice, such as an increase in the prescription of

different medication or social changes that have emerged from the necessity to care for

people with mental illness in the community.

Avoid fuzzy thinking and the repetition of information through using a concise heading

structure and paragraphs.

Support your arguments with a minimum of 15 quality references.

Part B (500 words – 15% of the total mark for the unit)

In refering to Activity 4.4 in the Study Guide, choose one of the personality disorders mentioned in

George Boeree’s text other than paranoid personality disorder, and outline the traumatic

experiences that are likely and typically have contributed to the formation of the symptoms typical

for the disorder. Support your arguments with a minimum of three quality references. Consult the

HWF Academic Writing Guide 2013 for referencing guidelines (see link under

Assessments section of Unit).

Please note that you will have to also study part of Section 5 to successfully complete this task.
