[url removed, login to view] is the task of Plato’s Crito? That is, what is the final goal or aim of the text? Within this response please make sure to include the following concepts: Platonic Formalism, Justice, Injustice, Social Contract Theory, Democracy (and its critique according to Plato), and lastly, why Socrates chooses to remain within the bounds of prison and face death.
2. Plato’s Phaedrus discusses the souls journey from “normal mortal life” to the “realm of the immortals.” Please discuss the souls journey making sure to reference the material world versus the formal world AND the world of the divine. Make certain you understand the Allegory of the Charioteer and what all of the horses represent in regards to the soul of the mortal and immortal.
3. Plato’s Symposium is a discussion on the origin of gender, love, and human consciousness’ tendency towards fixation (that is, binary distinction). How does Aristophanes describe this ‘origin story’ in terms of a splitting of the soul? How does Socrates react to this story in his explication of Love? How does Socrates overcome the problem of binary distinction (either or) and learn to focus on the concept of the whole? Make sure to discuss this as a meta-epistemology or a metaphysics.
4. According to Plato, what must we do within both our mortal and immortal lives to reach divinity – that is, be good? How does this differ from Aristotle’s understanding of what we ought to do in order to be good? Why do their approaches seem so radically different yet both result in the conceptual understanding that one must “Do good”?
5. Aristotle’s Ethics were written in a dialectical critique of Plato’s methodology. Why is this so or, more importantly, please discuss the different ways in which Plato and Aristotle attempted to understand a concept by going through their arguments in either of Plato’s texts we had read, as contrary to the method in Aristotle’s Ethics. Make certain to explain what the dialectic entails and how it is that Plato and Aristotle engaged within it. Describe the ways in which both thinkers arrived at their “end goal.”
6. What is virtue ethics? Clearly this answer should cover the majority of books 1 and 2 (perhaps parts of 3) of Aristotle’s Ethics and attempt to clearly outline how it is that Aristotle argues that the only way into an ethical life is through investigation of a person’s virtues. Make sure to discuss Character, Happiness, and habit. Pay extra attention to his work in etymology throughout the text.
