To become a good leader, you need to have a good understanding of yourself (strengths/weaknesses), have a strong grasp of characteristics of good leadership and find someone who has those characteristics that you can model yourself after. A helpful tool is a journal. Use this to honestly reflect upon situations where leadership glitched or worked. Share those reflections with a mentor. Yes, a mentor - another useful tool for leadership - is someone who you admire as a leader and would like to learn from.
There are different models of leadership, which one fits you best?
Learn to take criticism well. Put your pride aside and actually listen to those you lead. You don't necessary have to do what they suggest, but if you want them to follow you they need to know they will be heard by you.

There are an abundance of personality profiles online that are for free and can assist in you trying to determine your personal style of leadership and the common challenges/assets that arise when working with other people as their leader.
Why are you leading? This is perhaps the first question you need to answer for yourself. Make sure the answer is one that will keep you honest, focussed and passionate about your leadership role.
