The project requires you to use your UK residenceand explore its design reflecting on its suitability with respect to its occupants,

its programme (or functioning as a dwelling) and ultimately its impact on the environment

overall. To do so successfully, you must develop your own coherent methodology that will

allow you to approach your work in a meaningful [url removed, login to view] other words, the methodology

will clearly identify the questions you want to ask of your house and from that review your

to propose two key changes to your house that will significantly improve its performance and

in so doing, demonstrate in a rigorous manner the effect(s) that these changes will have on its

performance [url removed, login to view] understanding the interrelationships

between these key environmental variables and the role they play in shaping the complex

system that is a building, it is possible to make design decisions that weave strategies in a

manner appropriate for the needs of the building [url removed, login to view] exercise therefore seeks to tease out your understanding of the role that house plays as a

‘living’ object. In other words, this exercise expects you to understand how your house [url removed, login to view] aim of this exercise (for all students) is for you to provide satisfactory evidence that

you have undertaken a thorough and critical evaluation of your house and that you have

addressed the fundamental question “what is driving my energy consumption and carbon

emissions?” To do this you should:

(1) Develop a methodology that identifies key questions of relevance to your existing

house. This methodology must help provide an insight into the operation of your

dwelling from the perspectives of living and of the environment as a whole.

(2) Use the questions identified in the development of your methodology to explore the

key strategies at play that form the basis of the dwelling’s design as it currently

stands. These strategies (e.g. envelope, ventilation, gains, occupancy patterns and so

on) must be explored in a rigorous, critical and reflective manner

(3) Identify the (inter) relationships between the various mechanisms / strategies at

play (e.g. the relationship between solar gains, ventilation, fabric performance,

occupant comfort, liveability and so on), and show that you understand how they

work

(4) Reflect on this knowledge and build a coherent picture of the use and operation of

your dwelling as it currently stands, and its place within modern building codes /

best practice.

For those students enrolled on the BArch course, you must provide further satisfactory

evidence that you can:

(5) Use the knowledge gained from your exploration to identify two key areas for

improvement and, once again, explore these in a rigorous, critical and reflective

manner

(6) Identify the various factors that may influence the successful operation of any

changes you make to your dwelling (including for example prevailing climate, user

intervention, design detailing, on-site supervision, etc)

(7) Identify and explore, within the wider context (e.g. Code for Sustainable Homes,

SAP, PassivHaus, etc) additional strategies / requirements that you deem to be

particular relevant to the design of your house.
