I need software for writing onto RFID tags and for reading the tags. This is for the purpose of a small "self service" timing application. At the start line the contestant brings the tag to the usb reader, the program reads the contestant's number, displays it on the screen with a beep, and writes a timestamp into a file. The same thing happens at the finish line: a verification is given to the contestant that the tag has been read and a timestamp is written into a file with the contestants number. So it is the same program for start and finish. In case the tag gets damaged, there should be the option of typing in the number manually as well.
I think it would be practical that the program which is used for writing the contestants' numbers onto the tag is a separate program, ie not part of the timing application. I would like to have the code of the both programs for myself so I can make possible future adjustments myself.
The programs can be written in C or Java. My preferred environment for running the programs is Ubuntu Linux, on an HP laptop. Of course, if Java is used, it gives me more choice for the platform. I'm happy with a program that runs in a terminal window, but don't object a graphical interface either.
I'm using RFIDME USB dongles ([url removed, login to view]). The dongle appears in Linux as USBHID device.
