Create one working piece of software using VBA in Excel. You will convert your software into an Excel add- in (add-ins will be covered in the lectures). As is characteristic of add-ins, all output should be shown on an Excel worksheet rather than a userform; you are not expected to format the output, whether numerical or graphical. In addition, all numerical results outputted should be values, not formula. That is, none of the cells should contain an excel formula; all calculations should be done within VBA and only the result should be outputted to the worksheet. Finally, your software should have no more than two userforms.
Predefined and fixed options restrict the functionality and versatility of software. You want to give the user as much choice as they require. To do so, your software should have at least one aspect which is versatile. For example, for the repayment of a loan, let the user choose how they repay their loan, such as specify the number of repayments, the minimum payment or a fixed payment amount. Another example would be to offer repayment of 2 or more loans simultaneously, rather than just one loan.
You are expected to apply the GUI design theory discussed in lectures as well as the coding techniques. This software is simple enough that you should not need to take any code from the internet. You will be expected to explain your code during the oral presentation and if I have any doubts about its authenticity I will meet with your group at a set time after the presentation to discuss the code further.
During week 20, you will have an opportunity to receive feedback from other users (your peers in MA3696) on the usability of your software and the GUI design. You will also be providing feedback on your peers’ work. Your work will not be marked or assessed – you will only receive constructive comments on the strengths of your software as well as the aspects which could be improved. So, even if you are not finished with it, you will benefit from taking part.
End user documentation
Clearly and concisely describe how to use the software (no more than 2 sides of A4). This should include key definitions to any words the user may not know. If needed, use screen shots to create diagrams. As discussed in the GUI design theory, ideally the user shouldn’t need any instructions, the software should be straight forward to use. Thus, this documentation should be a reference for the user, but not a necessity.
“Individual” means separately, by yourself, not with anyone else. You will work together to create the software, but you will work on your own to write this short report. Please do not exceed 3 sides of A4.
The report should give justification for the GUI design implemented, including a specific and explicit description of all GUI principles you have applied, with examples. You should also include details of how you applied the user feedback you receive. If you do not participate in the peer feedback, please explain why you chose to opt out. Finally, describe any extensions or improvements that you would have made if you had the knowledge needed to program it in VBA. That is, is there anything you wanted to add or change (in order to improve your software), but were unable to because you didn’t have the knowledge of programming needed to do it?
