Set Task: The assignment questions in this lesson are going to be based upon your set task.
Get together with a friend, relative, colleague etc, and get them to talk about a problem that they are having, or have had in the past (nothing too serious, it can be anything that has/ does bother, frustrate or annoy them).
Try to restrict your contribution to 1/ paraphrasing the information your 'client' supplies you wit, 2/ using minimal response and 3/ reflecting their feelings.
You may need to record the conversation (with their permission) so that you can concentrate on the interview and not on trying remember what is being said.
You may need to try a number of times or attempt the same procedure with several different people. Use micro skills, however if you are unable to use them effectively, that's ok...we learn through our mistakes and through practice. You can still use your interview to work through the questions.
1/ Submit a transcript of the discussion you had in your set task (or a sample of it if it was very long). Indicate an example of where you have paraphrased, used a minimal response and reflected feelings.
2/ With regard to your example of paraphrasing:
Was it effective in enabling your client to see things more clearly? Why?
(if not, how might you have paraphrased differently?
(submit approx. 200 words).
3/ With regard to your example of reflection of feelings:
Do you think that your client experienced catharsis? Why?
Can you site any examples of where either yourself, or your client has confused thoughts and feelings. (if not, explain how sometimes they can be easily confused). 200 words approx.
4/ Can you pinpoint an example of where you have reflected back both content (thought) and feeling in the same phrase? If not, can you see anywhere that you may have done so, or do you think that it would have been inappropriate?
100-200 words approx.
I'll send the rest over the next two to three days before I go away.
Thanks again for the last one
