Dear Hiring Managers, did you know that when you specify that a contractor must have “Qualifications” US English Skills, or MS Word skills that the contractor must pay $[url removed, login to view] to do each test? Did you also know that you are missing out on a lot of talented people because they either cannot afford to “take the test” or just refuse to pay that amount just to prove they have English skills (in my case). For most contractors having to take a (paid) test severely erodes into their earnings. Now consider for a moment, just maybe the contractor already has these skills. Why should a contractor pay $5 to do each test when all they can sometimes hope to get is only $5 or $10 for a job, and then only if they are successful. So, their hard earned money goes into doing tests to prove they can do the job which 9 times out of 10 they don't get. Who wins in this situation? Only Freelancer. The contractor cannot bid because of the restriction and the employer misses out on possibly the best person for the job.
On the other hand, Employers get to post jobs, as I have found out, for free and no other strings attached. The employer gets their transcription, or their web site, or their report or whatever for a reasonable price but it's not really a win-win situation. Employers, please thing about this please. Make a difference! Say something about this to Freelance!
Is this fair? Should these be absorbed by the employee? They've already paid lots of money for their courses or degrees and then now have to pay again to prove they can do it.
Freelancer should be offering these tests for Free. oDesk and Elance, their competitors, definitely do. The contractors should not have to pay money to prove their skills, and then, to make it worse, bid lower just to accommodate the percentage rate that Freelancer take for each job. Business is business, but come on guys, let’s keeps the playing field real (and fair).
Freelancer needs to play a fair game for both the employee and employer. Until they can get their act together I say to all contractors I say "move over to the competitors" You can get a better deal than this! Let the employees take the tests for free. Let the truly qualified ones be able to showcase their skills.
I'll probably get severely reprimanded or banned for this, but after spending a couple of weeks perusing this site I don't really care. If I have made some impression or made someone (contractor or employer or Freelancer) think about it then I have achieved what I needed to do in this message.
