Help Passing Remote Data Between Computers Using Perl on Linux

This is for a little home project I'm working on and I just need some sample code to help piece it all together. Once I get the hardware, I will probably need some more help. What I want to do is grab a temperature reading from a sensor I have and then pass that temperature along with an associated time to another server. The receiving server would take the data and put it into MySQL. I just need a medium level of how this would work and maybe with some code examples. I will be using Linux and Perl.
