Simple Interactive Globe

To be used as the main point of user interaction on my website's homepage (website currently in development).

- The globe should be a high quality photo-realistic globe.
- It should be possible to zoom into/out from the globe such that at its closest the globe fills the screen/window, such that it is still possible to see the globe’s entire perimeter
- it is NOT a requirement to be able to zoom in infinitely

- The individual continents and oceans of the globe should be selectable:
- When a continent/ocean is clicked once, it is highlighted (the selected continent remains in full colour, while all other areas become greyscale)
- When a selected continent/ocean is clicked for a second time, it is un-highlighted and the globe returns to full colour.
- When a continent/ocean is double clicked, the user should be directed to another page within the website. The address for this page can be written into the application's code, as long as it is easy to change.
- When a continent/ocean is highlighted, it should be possible to double-click it to forward to the related page

- When first opened, the globe should rotate in the correct direction at a constant speed and on its correct angular tilt. The user is free to rotate the globe into any position, but after rotating, the globe should return to rotating in the correct direction and at the same speed as it initially did, but should NOT return to its correct orientation.
- There should be a button which returns the globe to its starting orientation - this button is as yet undefined/undesigned, so it should be possible to easily assign this action to any feature on the homepage.

I will provide a rough storyboard of my ideal requirements

The ultimate aim is to have a very sleek/high-quality interactive interface which is intuitive to use and is not slow to load/use. The appearance of the highlighted continents/oceans is very important, quality is required.

There is no stringent time frame; the website is still under development

Although I had an open time frame I had very regular updates on the project progression as well as plenty of examples to view. This excellent communication meant it was easy to have regular discussions, and allowed me to explain exactly what I wanted. This level of contact meant he understood what I wanted and quickly had a working example that roughly fit my requirements - with this initial example quickly built it was easy to develop further. This method of working was very productive - I always knew the project’s progress, I was able to express my thoughts about any of the features, and I had full confidence that I would receive an updated report quickly. Based on our discussions and the finished product I have no doubt in sonofrage's expertise - if he says he can do it, based on his work, he will be more than fully capable. The final result is exactly what I wanted - I have seen nothing that comes close to performing as well, I cannot recommend him and his abilities high enough.

I am a Computer Engineering graduate. I have studied various engineering subjects, and have a good understanding of the technologies around. I am proficient in Java EE and have worked with tools for enterprise integration like BPM tools, apache camel, CFEngine confiugration management, etc. I follow the design and coding practices as deemed good in the industry. During college, I have developed two games in C++, one using SDL for 2D graphics and the other one being a multithreaded game using Ogre 3D for graphics and Bullet library for physics. I have also developed a virtual classroom application using Java, that supports multicast of voice, text and activity on the blackboard over TCP, UDP or by tunneling. I have a basic knowledge of other languages and tools like C#, PHP, HTML, JavaScript, AJAX, ActionScript etc. I'm also an artist (both traditional and digital media) and have a good knowledge of Flash and Photoshop. Apart from that, I'm a musician, and a hobbyist photographer. My biggest strength lies in my never ending curiosity and the will to try new stuff. And I'm also good at it :)
