We want the logo to reflect the meaning of the company brand. Having said that, the company focus’s on clothing, the name of the logo KALO GIRLS. Since our focus is for the Hawaiian community the meaning behind KALO GIRLS as fallow, KALO pronounced “Kah-low” which means KALO is a root of an indigenous plant to Hawaii Kalo believed to have the greatest life source of all, also Kalo was the primary food of the Hawaiian people. The root of the plant is the key off the meaning off this business. With that in mind, when you do your research and ready to do the logo think very carefully on the story behind KALO. Further more, KALO GIRLS is an online casual t-shirt clothing line that is a meaningful and sentimental catering towards any current students, alumni, parents, faculty or others in the Hawaiian community. The mission is to evoke a sense of pride and belonging to a dying race.
My partner and I would like elaborate on the above description of the logo we are interested in having designed. As listed above, Kalo is a root of an indigenous plant to Hawaii and is believed to have the greatest life source of all. Kalo was the primary food of the Hawaiian people.
Our company's target audience is NOT for the entire Hawaiian community, but rather: any current students, alumni, parents, faculty, and other "ohana" (family) of The Kamehameha Schools. The Kamehameha Schools is a private, college prepatory institution, located in Hawaii, that was founded by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop in 1887. With that being said, we are looking for a logo that is simplistic and powerful, yet feminine.
My partner and I do request to see a mock up of a Kalo Girls design. We are not necessarily interested in seeing your previous work; what we are more interested in, is seeing how creative you can be with a cultural concept as deeply rooted as the Kalo Plant. We also are interested in seeing designs that incorporate a "poi pounder." The poi pounder is a tool that was and is used to turn the Kalo root into an edible paste-like food called poi. Both the Kalo root and the poi pounder are very recognizable symbols in Hawaiian culture. We want to see what a creative mind is able to design and whether or not the concept is grasped.
I have attached a picture of poi pounders that sometimes were used by women. The second attachment is a more commonly used poi pounder.
