We are looking for talented digital painters, illustrators, and concept artists to create visuals for an upcoming online collectible card game called Chromancer.


A large world of city-states exists amidst an aether of swirling energies. Chroma is a crystalline source of energy, which springs forth in little rifts in parts of the void. The city-states have large bustling economies and a central part of the economy is based around the harvesting of chroma. Teams go into the wilderness to do this, seeking out the little rifts and mining them. Chromancers are a special class of citizens with supernatural powers -- the ability to, through cards, manipulate these various energies and materialize forests, mountains, creatures from the past, great heroes, and even magical spells. The city states are awash with competing merchant interests and clans, and often a mining team will come across another; the two will compete for the mining spot. Typically mining squads are chaperoned by a Chromancer for this purpose: the Chromancers duel each other for the spot, quite literally manifesting armies out of the very energy they are drawing to lay claim over the source.


The Chromancer Universe takes place in a Medieval setting. The materials of the age are traditional and epoch appropriate -- wood, leather, steel, papyrus, vellum, precious metals, crystal, and stone. The art and art direction in the Chromancer Universe is inspired by a wide range of societies and cultures encompassing European, African, Middle and Near Eastern, and Asian Medieval traditions.

The art in the game is not meant to be explicitly representational or realistic, but instead should be painterly interpretations of a fantastic universe, appropriate to the general time period (5th to 15th centuries). Compositions should be unique and exciting. We want the world depicted in the cards to exude energy and dynamism.

The game is focused on colors, and the powers and characteristics of each of these colors. Red heroes, creatures, and buildings have very different attributes (and appropriate strategies) than Blue or Green ones.

As such, the artwork created should focus heavily on color, and less on defined form. Think swirling, impressionistic artwork, instead of very strict linework and defined form (such as cell shading or anime influenced design). We are interested in: COLOR, MOVEMENT, COMPOSITION, and EMOTION. We do not want traditional Dungeons and Dragon type artwork. We want Impressionistic artistry and style.


Digital paintings or illustrations that we can use to illustrate the website, associated materials, and - most importantly - help establish an atmosphere as the game is developed. We will be looking for an initial run of 5 illustrations/paintings, after an initial trial project of one painting (to calibrate expectations and establish a working relationship). Please bid for the cost of 5 digital painting/illustrations, at a minimum size of 11x17 at 300dpi.
