Enhance existing java application to interpret and visualise temporal data


The Air Traffic Management (ATM) industry is currently evolving from a legacy point-to-point system architecture to System Wide Information Management (SWIM). The goal of SWIM is to achieve global interoperability using mainstream IT technologies. To achieve this EUROCONTROL and the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) have defined a global data exchange standard called the Aeronautical Information eXchange Model (AIXM) [url removed, login to view] . Based on XML, AIXM encodes all elements of ATM including Aerodromes, Airspace, Services, Navaids, Procedures and Routes in XML. Many of these elements have both geospatial and temporal elements all of which require visualization

What does the application NOW do?

The existing viewer is a Java application which uses libraries for parsing Geography Markup Language (GML) to read AIXM files and displays the AIXM features on a 3D globe using the WorldWind digital globe supplied by NASA. [url removed, login to view] This application displays the geometry and attribute information for each AIXM feature but ignores the temporal aspects of the AIXM model.

Project Goal

Enhance the existing ATM viewer application so that it can interact/pull temporal data from model (sample data), process it, and subsequently outputs a visualized form of the data on the digital globe. By the end of the project, it must have at least the following three functionalities up and running:

• see runways being opened and closed,

• airspaces being activated and deactivated and

• navigation aids being shut down for maintenance

The visualisation of the temporal data must be made in the form of a "time-slide" on the application that the user can drag forwards and backwards to see the state of an airport or airspace at any given time.
