Project Description

Arcade style computer games keep a list of players’ names and the scores that they have achieved in a table of the top 10 scores. I need a program tat will model this feature. Note: a new score has to exceed an existing score to take its place in the list. If a new score is only equal to an existing score, then precedence is given to the existing score (see example below when entry for ‘Jim’ is made).

When in use, the output from the program may look like this:

Welcome to the top ten program

Enter a name (*** to quit) Fred

Enter a score 845

The top ten is

1) Fred 845

Enter a name(*** to quit) Ray

Enter a score 800

The top ten is

1) Fred 845

2) Ray 800

Enter a name(*** to quit) Sue

Enter a score 1000

The top ten is

1) Sue 1000

2) Fred 845

3) Ray 800

Enter a name(*** to quit) Jim

Enter a score 1000

The top ten is

1) Sue 1000

2) Jim 1000

3) Fred 845

4) Ray 800

Enter a name(*** to quit) ***

Thank you for using this program

Note: Scores can only be whole numbers and the maximum score is 10 million.

Task 1 - Planning

Analyse the problem stated in the assignment brief and write down your algorithm using a flowchart or pseudocode.

Task 2 – Coding

Using your algorithm, code a solution using a Java console application, using Scanner for keyboard input. Provide a listing of the source code. This should be a single Java class. Produce a Data Dictionary, clearly stating the scope of the variables used.

All code used must reflect programming standards (Comments, Indentation of code etc.).

Additional Notes:

The program is just one class, with a main method. There is no use of an array sort utility or anything. The only utility to be imported into the code is the [url removed, login to view] to allow for keyboard input. The arrays for the scores are all sorted into descending order by the use of loops only.

The program has to be written just using if-else, do-while and for loops. I have part of the code written already should the developer wish to see it. The code I have basically just needs modification to sort the score array into descending order.
