I want to port (install) a basic Linux operating system on an ARM based Tablet. I have 2 tablets. YOU CAN CHOOSE whichever tablet you wish to use for the project. One tablet has an Freescale Imx-515 CPU and the other a Telechips Tcc88xx CPU. These are both Cortex-8 ARM application processors. Very nice tablets. Both have 8GB of Nand and 512MB of RAM. They have touchscreens (one is a 10 in and the other is a 7 in). Both have USB ports. Both have SD micro-card ports. One has an Ethernet port.
Main Requirements: Directions on how to INSTALL a Linux operating system that boots to console. My main concern is getting rid of Android and converting to Linux. I am a very experienced Linux user and can cross-compile and develop my own system once I am capable of understanding how to install an a Linux installation on one of these tablets.
My Frustrations and the reason for this project are:
1) Flashing the Nand (installing the file system, bootloader and kernel images) is difficult for me. I don't really understand the process. USB drivers to actually read, write and erase Nand are hard to come by in the world of tablets. I do have the USB driver called FWDN for the Telechips CPU, however, it will only install [url removed, login to view] (bootloader), [url removed, login to view] and NAND [url removed, login to view] file structures. I can't make heads or tales of these files (however, if somebody understands how to use this USB driver and use it to our benefit then great.) By the way FWDN is a Windows driver. I prefer using Linux as a host (I normally run CentOS 6). I have both computers, Windows and Linux that can be used as hosts to target the Tablet installation.
PS: I would imagine that U-boot is the best bootloader solution for this project, however, I don't understand U-boot very well either. I come for a world of Grub, Linux, and IDE harddrives.. LOL
Somebody out there I am sure really knows this stuff. I am hopeful to find someone that can help me. This is a small project but I am willing to pay for some knowledge and honest advice.
Thanks for looking at my project.
