App-y students take national prize
Undergraduates scoop award to create their own mobile phone app
Students from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have won a national competition to create their own mobile phone application.
The three undergraduates and one former student were crowned PhoneBrain Grand Final winners in the 17 to 19 age group despite facing stiff opposition in the Dragons’ Den styled event.
Shahid Bhayat, Muhammad Isap, Mohammed Seedat and Safvan Daria, pitched their idea for Top Job, a social networking app aimed at young people, to judges from major companies including BT, ITV, O2 and Three.
“It was great to have an opportunity to pitch our idea to such massive names in the industry but to win was just fantastic”
The app for both Apple and Android phones is aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds and focuses on issues and information surrounding youth unemployment. The team, who received support from UCLan’s Fayyaz Ali, was particularly keen to highlight volunteering opportunities, as well as job vacancies.
Mohammed said: “It was great to have an opportunity to pitch our idea to such massive names in the industry but to win was just fantastic.
“We’re now looking for any help and support with the initiative. We are aware that the UCLan Centre for Volunteering is looking to build an app for young people and more than happy to partner up with them but any other from the IT department advice and support will be gratefully received.”
The group won £1000 to help create the app and the students are receiving business mentoring support for the year.
The event was held at ITV's headquarters in London.
