exhaustive search program

Hi,

I need code for an exhaustive search program in C which will run efficiently in processing huge files. This program has to be very time efficient.

Purpose of the program: count frequency of all patterns occured in a file full of letters and output all the combinations and the frequency they occured.

The program will take an integer from a user. Then it'll open a file which contains rows of letters composed of 'ABCD'. For example: if the user input 6, it'll read letter one to letter 6 and see if this combination already exist, if it does, it'll increment the counter, if it doesn't, it'll add an entry. Then the program will read letters 2 to 7 and repeat the previous step until the EOF is reached. It'll then it will then sort the list and output 2 file, one file is sorted according to the combination in descending order, the other one will be sorted according to the frequency it occurs. There might be a few details I need to clarify, I'll sent the details before the project began.
