vbulletin mod rewrite friendly url

I run vbulletin 4.1.6, alongside drupal on my website.
vbulletin forum is installed in the directory ...com/forum
I want to enable mod rewrite urls but have a problem.
Currently, the links in the forum are like ...com/forum/[url removed, login to view]
Then they 301 redirect to the friendly url. So the forum post pages are good, with a friendly url. However the links to the pages are not.
I want the links to be the actual friendly url, not the php url. Therefore there shall be no redirection.
The problem is, when I enable mod rewrite friendly urls, the php links become ...com/forum/forums/friendly-url
Clearly, the 'forums' should not be there. So that page does not exist.
I understand fixing this involves editing the htaccess file. I've tried, but I cannot fix it for some reason.
I need the mod rewrite url's link fixing. So that the url displays correctly from the link in the main forum and also on my drupal site, where there is a block which links to the most recent forum posts.
This is a htaccess job, and therefore I do not want to pay more than $30 for this. So please do not big higher than this, otherwise I will know you haven't even read the job description.
