Project Description

I am a senior civil engineering student, and as part of my requirements for graduation, I have worked on a team project. We are designing and building a "Real Time Renewable Energy Kiosk" to display in the college.

Basically, we have set up a weather station to monitor incoming solar radiation and wind power, and we want to show the energy that is available that is not being harnessed by the university. The problem is, is that we are civil engineers...not computer programmers...and as we have reached the end of our project, the programming has turned out to be more than we can handle. We are authorized to use an outside programmer.

We need help to create an applet in java or a flash app for our website, that will allow a user to select from 2-3 types of different solar panels with different parameters, and select a percentage of the current system usage to offset with solar panels. With this, the program will calculate the initial system cost, how long it will take to pay off (using engineering economy formulae), and the reduction in greenhouse gases. Initially, we wanted to pull live data from our weather station to use in these calculations, but have now settled for using standard values, and just displaying the weather station data elsewhere.

We already have webspace and a website under construction, which will be pulled up on a touch screen display. So the interface for the app needs to be touch screen friendly.
