Our Advisory Board is a private forum, where a select few of our Captains will be available for consult to our registered Captains (Candidates), on an anonymous basis.
Purpose - Many Captains in their 30s start out as a deckhand, 19-21 or so, become mate 25 or so, become Capt 29-30 or so. They've had no formal management training, no formal education. They know boats, but not much else. Once they're Captain, there's no one else to go to for advice. The job market for captains, because there's only ONE per yacht, is always super competitive. So, to ask a fellow captain a question advice about how to handle a certain situation, could mean that he - if he's looking for a job or a better job - might find a way to undermine you to your boss to try and take your job somehow. So when a new Captain comes upon a dilemma, say the Chief Stew starts a relationship with the owner's Son, how does he know how to resolve the problem? He can't go to the owner, because the owner doesn't want to be bothered, he's rich and playing golf and making millions of dollars, and feels that if the Captain can't manage his crew then he's the wrong guy for the job. And the captain can't go to another captain friend because the captain might sabotage his job, or bad mouth him, or tell the chief stew, etc. So, the new Captain has to figure it out himself, which usually ends up with him firing the chief stew instead of handling it well, costing the owner the continuity of service, a placement fee, new uniforms, bad blood with the son, all kinds of repercussions he didn't expect.
This advisory board could help solve this dilemma. The new captain can ask an experienced captain for advice, and the experienced captain gives it to him out of his love for the industry, without any fee or credit, and without knowing who the guy is and having no way to hurt the guys employment. The conversation thread would be doulbe blind - private - between the two people, and no contact information is made available. The candidate will know which Advisor he has selected, but the advisor won’t know who the candidate is, unless the candidate tells him.
In order for a candidate to be able to contact one of the advisors, he must be registered with Crew Unlimited, and he must agree to certain terms, like he will not harrass or sue or defame the advisor nor crew unlimited - like a hold harmless agreement - before he can post his 'dilemma'. he can choose an advisor who's advice he'd like, or he can post it as an 'open' question. and, when he posts it to a specific advisor, the advisor gets notice by email and can respond by email or online via the forum.
it's very important that the communication remains confidential for the candidate asking advice, but he Must be registered with crew unlimited as a candidate before he can post a dilemma/question for advice.
we already have candidate registration, and i have already selected a handful of advisors, who also must be registered with us. but, if someone who is not an advisor wants to be an advisor, there must be a way for him/her to notify/request advisor privileges, and for me to designate in an admin section Advisor = yes so his profile is visible, pulling his photo from our crew_files folder.
