Looking to build back-end functionality for a website that can automatically extract XBRL financial data for the universe of corporations that publicly file with www.sec.gov. The goal is to allow for site visitors to type in a stock ticker, which will then organize and return all available XBRL-tagged data over time. A good example of the basic functionality (for reference purposes only) would be www.calcbench.com.
Ideally, the site would ultimately allow for users to trace, manipulate, organize, screen, and download (to Excel) any desired tagged data, while also having the flexibility for users/admin to submit historical (typically pre-2007), but untagged, data in order to add to the number of time periods, or to create a new (i.e., non-XBRL tagged) datasets that can be reviewed and quality-checked by the site administrator. For example, if "Revenue" is available from XBRL-tagged data from 2007-2012, users or admin can "fill in" for pre-2007 periods to improve the robustness of available data.
Also, some XBRL tags (e.g., "Segment Information") may contain several subsets of data in less structured format. Ideally, functionality can either automatically structure the data, and/or users or admin can do so themselves for the benefit of other users. In this way, any data contained within an XBRL-tagged document section can be further structured and organized by item, over time. This may require calling and saving XBRL data into a separate database, such that it can be expanded upon with non-XBRL data, though please elaborate on a contemplated solution. The site should maintain a live connection with the [url removed, login to view] site (perhaps via the XBRL RSS feed), so that data updates automatically.
Regarding the front-end, which can be bid together with the back-end functionality (we would ideally like to understand the timing and cost for each separately, if feasible), the basic functionality would allow users to view the full set of data for any given company (by typing in a ticker) organized by Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, Segment Information, etc.. by fiscal quarter and fiscal year, as desired. User can click on and trace any datapoint to the source document from the site. Any numerical value can be manipulated with a formula to show the result of the calculation over time, and work can be saved.
Front-end functionality would also include a secure Account creation/subscription/log-in page, basic Profile page, and ability for a user to "comment" (publicly or privately) on any given data point or data set. Ideally, for any given value, the site will also leave "room" via new columns (quarterly and annual), for users to input estimated forecast values which can be viewed (along with the number of estimates, average, median, min, and max) by other users.
More detail available upon request.
