The sustainability of an informed career choice for Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior High School students (SHS) in Ghana.
The researcher will use a qualitative case study to carry out this research, in using this type of research method the researcher will be able get an understanding of how participant relate to their learning in their environment. Dawson (2002) goes on to say qualitative research looks at the behavioral experience and explores ideas using methods similar to focus groups or interviews, in order to understand the inferences made my participants about their various experiences. Interviews will be carried out on current students between two large JHS and SHS in Ghana, two teachers and a head teacher of one of the secondary schools as well as a member of the Ministry of Education to find out what systems Ghana has in place for informing JHS/SHS students about career choices. A focus group interview will also be carried out on past secondary student of a teterchy educational institution to find out their views and concerns on this issue. In using both interviews and focus group interviews participants will be able to talk about their experiences, both the disadvantages and advantages which will be used to answer the research question. Focus group is an interview technique used to discuss and expose participants’ views on the research question in a group versus the structured or semi-structured interview which is conducted individually which offer uniqueness but at the same time have elements of the latter (Spindler & Hammond, 2000). The advantages and disadvantages of the JHS/SHS policies and curricula in Ghana will also be looked at. What the UK has to inform secondary school students in career choices, can the UK system be implemented in Ghana? Hopefully through this research, the gaps in career counselling within the secondary schools in Ghana can be highlighted so that recommendations will then be suggested. This research will be focused on how secondary students can be supported to make an informed career choice. One of the reasons why this is an interesting research topic is because there is a serious concern for the furtherance of future students and not a lot of research has been carried out in Ghana in order to improve on the current situation (UNEVOC 1994).
