Project Description

First of all, give an introduction to and description of the movement. What social changes were its participants trying to carry out or resist? Who the targets of the protest? In this case, he movement is Occupy WallStreet

Discuss the organizations that were involved in the movement. Did they seek to work from the “inside” or the “outside”—or a combination of both? Did they use different kinds of “disruption” in order to gain leverage? Be specific about the kinds of tactics that were used (e.g. boycott, picketing, marching, lobbying, etc), and their objectives.

What “analysis” or frames did they present? How did movement participants apply their sociological imagination to understand the social problems they faced? (In answering this question, you may want to consult primary documents or speeches from the movement itself).

What kinds of challenges or obstacles did the movement confront? Were elites in support or against this movement, or was this more of a grassroots movement? Did the government repress collective protest? Why or why not?

Discuss the outcome of the movement. Did it produce changes in culture, policy, and/or institutions? (See Ch 17 of the Leon-Guerrero textbook if you need more information).

Optional: Discuss any other factors that were at play, such as the role of the media, movement leaders, and governmental responses. Were there any dramatic events or “sparks” that helped the movement grow? Were there any tactics that really seemed to work?

In concluding your paper, briefly discuss any lessons that could be learned from this movement that could be useful for the future. What are some interesting implications from your research? If applicable, relate your movement to the various social movement theories we’ve discussed in the class (disruption vs. formal organization, political process, etc).
